As most of you guys know, and have seen, my shop.Just a regular quanset hut, on a concrete foundation. And the door on the front is 8' high, and 10' wide. But there is room to go up 2 more feet. So, for quite a while, we've been keeping an eye out for a garage door. One 10'x12" complete with opener showed up on Cl for $200.And we dragged it home.Enjoy.The old door. So,Being that the doors are 12' wide, we have to cut a foot off each end. Reply:Alrighty,There you go.Pretty much done.We need to mess with the tension of the springs, and the travel on the opener. And put the trim on the outside. Then we should be done.Once I get it all done, and tuned up, I'll make a video of it in operation you you all.Have a good night everyone.~JohnJust a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Reply:John, just wondering, will your gantry crane pass under the motor unit for the door?  Best regards Bob
Reply:Good deal man.
Reply:Nice, now they'll have to raise your taxes !
Reply:Those openers give a longer life to those doors, next 'quick return' piece on your top roller!
Reply:And a garage door opener? Next thing we'll know you'll be installing luxuries like heat, insulation, and windows!12v battery, jumper cables, and a 6013.I only have a facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/pages/VPT/244788508917829
Reply:Not bad at all. You lucked out on the foam filled doors like that so you could cut them down. I guess in your neck of the woods insulated doors are probably standard compared to around here. I wondered if you realized what you were doing when I saw picts that you chopped the top track. Nice job on the rework there. Be VERY cautious with that torsion spring. I know a guy who ended up loosing his thumb to one when the guy he was working with slipped and the spring suddenly let go.I have a used door like that I need to eventually get installed in my shop space. Down side is it's to wide right now for the opening as it sits and trimming the doors won't work like yours did since it's single layer sheet. I have to shift the column on one side of the door by 12". I no longer have easy access to the heavy equipment to lift the steel beam so I can move the wood column, or block up the outside which was the original plan. It also blocks about 1/2 the over head lights when you have to door up, so I have to redo most of the lights in the shop after I put in the door..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I insulated my own doors. The are the same garage doors just without the foam in them. I cut and pushed in styrofoam, then used that plastic tub surround stuff to cover it. Its like a stock insulated door now. I did have to give a few more turns on each spring so the doors would go up again though.12v battery, jumper cables, and a 6013.I only have a facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/pages/VPT/244788508917829
Reply:John,Is the panel structure very strong? If not I suggest attaching a piece of angle across the width of the door where the opener attaches to it. I've had some bend due to having too short of a support across the top of the door. Originally Posted by VPTI insulated my own doors. The are the same garage doors just without the foam in them. Reply:That worked out great. Good job
Reply:John Why did you cut 12" off each end wouldn't cutting 24" from one end been easier?

Reply:Originally Posted by GravelTell me more about this plastic tub surround stuff you speak of. I've been looking for something like that so I can insulate my garage doors without buying the crappy kits they sell at HD.

Reply:John, you do some really fine work.  When I posted my question about the gantry crane passing under the motor, and seeing your thoughtfulness on your other works, I thought that you would have entertained that part of this job also.  Just my observations from your pictures.  Best regards Bob
Reply:Good job...you'll really enjoy the door!!BTW, don't forget to retrieve your two vise grips on the ends of your tracks!!  (showed up in the video)
