A few months back I bought a super flex CK Air Cooled set up for my TIG.......I was concerned about abrasion..... as that is why my previous power cable fell apart I'm sure.....Online you can buy leather ones........ fabric ones...... fancy ones........not so fancy ones....... some very expensive.... some very cheap.........Well.........A thread that I enjoy on GJ is called 44 Bikes Frame Shop......... pure welding porn....... excellent display of skill and ability.....In looking at his photos, I realized what he used to cover his air cooled power cable...... 1" Nylon Webbing.....Here's the PIC I saw that gave me the idea:Back when I was climbing (before Ava was born) I had.... and still have..... hundreds of feet of this exact stuff....... I mean..... I never knew when I would climb up 450 feet and realize I was going to have bail out.... and leave behind gear..... or.... leave behind a few feet of cheapo webbing and call it a day......This stuff has been in my attic for 4 years....... all but forgotton about...... until I saw this guys pictures with a use for it as a power line cover held fast with zip ties...... Total cost: ZERO......PICS...... Attached ImagesPrecision TIG 185 and MP 210Bobcat 225NTCutmaster 42O/A tanks.... 2 Argon tanks...... 2 C25 TanksFacebook...... Reply:Make sure its tubular webbing, there is a non tubular type.
Reply:I like the idea for water cooled torches but every air cooled torch I have or have used has hose that seems very durable. I have had a few air cooled rigs get holes in them but I'm not sure a cover would have helped them. Does the super flex hose seem soft enough that it needs a cover? I have really been thinking about getting one or two of them.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG

Reply:Fexal, you need to trim those zip-ties with a pair of flush-cuts (or at least some straight nail clippers)..they will gut you like a fish if left like that. Trust me!http://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories
Reply:@ Fexal - nice adaptation of tubular webbing! Was using some webbing today, along with multiple "quick-draws", on sport lead & top roping routes in western NOVA. That webbing resists abrasion like the Hammers of Hell. Been rip'n the stuff, in conjunction with 6mm cordalets, for years. Great as slings to anchor points and for protective sheathing to load-equalized static lines used in top roping. When the cheap covers on my SuperFlex cables wear out, gun'a employ your technique. Reply:ZT..... Good thinking...... I will trim them on your recommendation knowing you are probably very right..........Manokai...... This webbing has gotten me out of many a jam north of 300 feet....... And I used it to anchor top ropes on 100 foot roofs.......... It's so cheap I slinged my 4 sets of cams for the north face of Leaning tower and left another 30 feet to rap off the tree on the backside...... It's probably still there..... 15 years later.....Precision TIG 185 and MP 210Bobcat 225NTCutmaster 42O/A tanks.... 2 Argon tanks...... 2 C25 TanksFacebook...... Reply:Varflex makes purpose-built nylon sleeving. I have a bunch of rolls of their 3/8" ID thanks to my former employer's penchant for scrapping materials. It's wound flat on the spool, but can be opened up to be tubular. It's soft and flexible and basically looks and feels like a big roll of shoelace material. Pretty strong too - I've been using it to tie up various things around the yard/garage/basement. The rolls I have are 250' each - there may be someone out there that sells it by the foot:http://www.varflex.com/varf-spec_nylon.htmlI would imagine the climbing stuff is pretty strong and abrasion-resistant too since it's made to handle climbing loads and be used on rough rocks...

Reply:You can get heat shrink tubing in large dia from an electrical supply house and use a short piece of it instead of the wire tie. I really dislike wire ties, after a while the sleeve slips away from the torch. I have had much better luck with the heat shrink.

Reply:The cover I have for the watercooled torch came stock with wire ties at both ends....The zipper is a pain in the rear to get connected correctly but it works rather well when you can get it to bite......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:To answer Weldermike's comment about hydraulic hose covering, any place that carries Dayco hydraulic hose and fittings can get it(back of catalog). Problem is there is a minimum quantity order (can't recall what it is now) but Fexals method is cheaper. When I looked into it about 3 years ago- at jobber price the material was going to be about $36 you can buy a 100 feet of the product Fexal uses for that amount!Hmmmmmmm! That's about the 2003rd. use of Tubular nylon I have seen over the years. OK, now the parachute rigger/aircraft mechanic part of my brain kicks in and says "NYLON IS FLAMMABLE, has a low ignition point and drips hot little buttons of 3rd degree burns on you". Nylon is also very intolerant of UV degradation which a welder will provide plenty of.I think I will order some fiberglass tubular firesleeve and install it correctly, which will eliminate the tywrap problem as well. And, yes those things will slice you open as fast a poorly done safety wire tail! One source for firesleeve materials. http://www.americanfiresleeve.com/index.html If you have extreme abrasion problems then you can always go HIGH BUCK and get the silicone coated sleeve. It will take exposure to fuel fire and survive. Nice idea however, just needs a bit of further refinement.RogerOld, Tired, and GRUMPYSalesman will call, Batteries not included, Assembly is required, and FREE ADVICE IS WORTH EXACTLY WHAT YOU PAY FOR IT!Dial Arc 250HFThunderbolt 225 AC/DCAssorted A/O torches
