She runs and welds but she is ugly. Lots of burnt wires need replacing, i got the hood and doors sand blasted and are being painted. sprayed pretty much everything with two cans of engine de-greaser and seafoam penetrating oil. Planning on replacing the exhaust tomorrow if i can get it too un seize from the manifold. New face plate i found but i do not like the price tag attached to it $200+ for it on ebay. Had to build that engine hoist today just to get it out of the back of my rig truck. I looked stupid as hell with two machines rolling around town. The body is in really good condition just a few very small dings and the radiator protection grating is dinged up but a torch and a hammer will fix that. Got a pretty close match for the paint Safety Blue from lowes. Need some color suggestions for the frame and engine. Comments and suggestions on this project are highly welcome.~1987 Lincoln Sa-200~~1978 Miller Big 40~ (restored) ~and everything inbetween~
Reply:Good working old welders, I had a big 40 Diesel back in the 70's.
Reply:I prefer to hang them up as well when I'm shooting at them Just kidding (well, not really, I had a bad experience with them and roundly dislike them). They're not all bad, performance is mixed from my experience and what I've heard from others. Hopefully, you got a good one. You'll want to pay close attention to your wiring as you clean it up and replace it. If the wrong ones come undone, or break, you'll basically lose output power and play hell trying to find out the cause.Ask me how I know that Give Bills Welder Repair a call, they used to have those faceplates. I can't remember if they stocked them or not, but they were under $100 IIRC.There used to be a seller on eBay who had brand new manifolds for those engines, but it's been a very long time since I saw them. You can try penetrating oil and a pipe wrench to get the exhaust pipe off, but you'll likely break the manifold before it comes loose. I just welded an end onto the existing pipe and did it that way. The hole is a 1 1/2" NPT if memory serves. Some mean green from the dollar store and a dish brush will clean it up real nice. I can send you a tech manual for it. If you replace any wiring, you'll want the schematic to double check connection locations.Shoot me a PM with an email.Expert Garage Hack....https://www.facebook.com/steven.webber.948 |
