so i picked up 2 sa 200's from an ol liner, one needed carb rebuilt and the other is well let's just say she's a parts machine (she's all there - the carb and starter) anyway's went to tsc and picked up a rebuild kit, $ 24.99 (awesome) and rebuilt the carb, so all together now and as your starting and when the engine shut's down there's a knocking noise (when running no knock) i traced the sound to the mag what would/could this be??????i'm thinkin take the other mag off the parts whore but want to hear some response!thanksRandysecret squirrel weldingslingin steel since 2002
Reply:This is a normal noise. Allows the mag to flip quickly when the engine is turned over when starting. Makes the mag give enough spark at starting speed to fire the plugs. Can't say I remember what it is called offhand but is normal and a desired function.Edit -- Might be called impulse. A feature to allow a slowly turning engine with a magneto to start. The magneto is able to deliver full power to the spark plug even though it is only turning slowly. Think hand crank to make sense of all this. Anyway, the impulse is making the knocking noise.Last edited by Nitesky; 02-13-2011 at 08:19 PM.Reason: Finally rememberedGordie -- "I believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant."
Reply:ok then! it will stay! i had a 69 redface and it did'nt do this hence the reason i was asking, this machine being a 60 i did'nt think too much differanceThanks for the replysecret squirrel weldingslingin steel since 2002
Reply:All SA-200s act just little bit differently. 3 of mine, the impulse coupling makes no noise at all, one makes just enough noise that you can hear it. The newest of the group is the loudest. Reply:this one is a 61 code 4150ser ra-429015it's weird cause my 69 made no noise but like i said if it aint hurtin it it'll stay!secret squirrel weldingslingin steel since 2002
Reply:you can also find the mags used on craigslist, or old tractor forums. I paid under 40 bucks for my Fairbanks Morse when the coil went on the American Bosch, put it in and it fired right up. good to at least get the welder going to check it out."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251 Syncrowave 300 30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200 1 short hood SA250 SAM 400
Reply:Magneto impulse makes a clicking sound when starting that is normal and how it works. After it starts if still clicking something is wrong the impulse should throw out by then it is only used for starting and centrifugal force throws it out after engine starts. If it is still clicking or knocking loud after starting you need to get it off and looked over probably has worn impulse parts or could be something wearing out in the governor too. Leave the impulse clicking after engine starts you got metal to metal parts in oil wearing out it's going to eventually thrash the mag and governor or worse.
Reply:it only clicks when starting and then again at the last rotation when the engine shuts down, not while running, it is quiet when running. i have taken it off apart and everything looks real clean good no worn/broken/missing parts that i can seesecret squirrel weldingslingin steel since 2002
Reply:If it's running good otherwise and starts easy should be fine. |
