I plan to build something like this but for a cat 1 three point hitch.  The rake teeth are some type of low grade spring steel and I plan to weld them to 2 in angle similar to what is in this picture.  What I planto do is 1  Strip the paint off the rake teeth in the weld zone.2  Tack the tooth in place with 6011,  just enough to hold it in place.3  Preheat each location bringing the angle and tooth end up to about 400 F.4  Weld with 7018.  Let cool naturally.Do you guys think these welds will hold up given the mismatch in metal type.millermatic 130XPharbour freight 180 amp mig with added caps.hobart stickmate ac/dcpowerarc 200
Reply:IMO it's just not a good idea to weld spring steel. Maybe figure a way to bolt them in place.                                        MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:I built one similar years ago. I ran a piece of pipe through the spring coils. Took the angle iron and laid it across, bolting each spring to it on the theory of wear or breakage, they would be easily replicable. I agree, don't weld them as cheap spring steel is harder to weld than good spring steel!
Reply:They will bust off.I've tried it.Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Trump/Carson 2016-2024
Reply:Ok, I think I need to change plans.  I will put a pipe through the center of the coils.  I would like to think of something easy to keep them in place instead of bolting each one down, will be thirty of them.Maybe I can hold them in place with beam mounts ( I don't know what to call em ).Thanksmillermatic 130XPharbour freight 180 amp mig with added caps.hobart stickmate ac/dcpowerarc 200

Reply:The one tooth I bought to think on was this one.http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/stor...nd-rake-modelsThe ID of the coil measures 1 13/16 "  I like BD1 idea of using the next size up pipe sections as spacers. What I am making is a grass rake to collect grass clippings for the garden. Thanks everybodymillermatic 130XPharbour freight 180 amp mig with added caps.hobart stickmate ac/dcpowerarc 200

Reply:What I am up to is collecting mulch for a garden. The secret to growing monster veggies is thick grass mulch.  I let some land grow up tall and harvest the grass/weeds for the garden with either a finish mower or a 4' bush hog.  Currently use the finish mower to blow the grass into rows then hand rake into piles then load onto a wagon to take to the garden. But blowing the grass into piles further grinds it up and works the poor ole tractor pretty hard.  I plan to cut then use this contraption as a "dump rake" by raising it periodically with the 3 pt hitch.I made a grass cart consisting basically of a dragged piece of plywood raised in the front to clear objects.  It's easy to rake onto this plywood. Thanks for all the info.millermatic 130XPharbour freight 180 amp mig with added caps.hobart stickmate ac/dcpowerarc 200
Reply:Maybe consider a landscape rake. They work great on grading gravel driveways too. I have used it after bush hogging high weedy fields to gather the weeds and really excels for rounding up branches from my weeping willows that blow down.  http://www.landpride.com/products/92...andscape-rakes.https://images.search.yahoo.com/sear...=organic&ri=76

Reply:I found black iron pipe that fits the inner dia of my rake teeth.  1 1/4  Sch 40Can I easily weld it to regular hot rolled steel.millermatic 130XPharbour freight 180 amp mig with added caps.hobart stickmate ac/dcpowerarc 200
Reply:Because 7018 glazes over after striking it. You have to knock the glaze off the tip before it will restrike! I use 6010 for tacking-7018 to weld. If you want to use 7018 for tacking-keep a red brick handy. They work great for knocking the glaze off the end of your rod.
Reply:it looks like those spring teeth are welded on to the bar in the pic. Id probally do a sandwich plate to so you could bolt them together but if youve seen them welded befor give it a try on the one you have see what happinsHigh Octane Welding
Reply:What's drilling 30 holes? In the grand scheme of time, it would take less time to drill 30 holes, than cut spacers, design a clamping thingy.
