Seahawks/Packers kickoff in an hour so I'll be brief on post and patient for replies Welding out of doors: what techniques work for shielding weld area from breezes and how windy is too windy? From what I've read around here TIG is most susceptible and just turning up the shielding gas flow can induce more air so, what are options: welding curtain just on windward side, shop rag/plywood closer to the joint? Is MIG w/ CO2 as susceptible or stick the best choice outdoors? Thanks,DB
Reply:Any process that uses a Shielding gas is susceptible to the wind. Use whatever means necessary to block the wind although I might skip the flammable shop rag Fluxcore for wire feedStick if ya got it.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:I've run this in 90-MPH winds in Alaska, with no problems. http://www.lincolnelectric.com/en-us...olnElectric%29Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:I've never tried flux core...guess now's as good a time as any.I do have a welding blanket to try (or thought about welding screen so I can get as much light on the subject as I can). And, breaking out the stick is always an option...I want to play more with all processes with the hope of improving.DB
Reply:I was getting porosity MIG welding in a shop when the heater came on about 15' above me. Couldn't figure out what was going on till another guy stood behind to block the air from the heater. Stick or Innershield is best outside or where it's breezy. Grinding out welds sucks!
Reply:If u have to tig outside in mild to moderate wind just set up some tarps around you.  We have to do it quite often in the field. Usually when were up in the air on scaffolding at a fefinery we wii enclose the entire area in tarps and weld away.  Last joint I did was 20 in. Line sch. 80 tig all the way out.  Windy and raining.  Still shot clean.
Reply:Buy the way if u have to weld outside I would recommend stick all the way.

Reply:Yeah if you must use mig/tig outside a tent is almost a must..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:Picked up a roll of .035 flux core...will see if I can play with it a bit this weekend. We've had a couple beautiful days- unlike the east coast. CEP, between the wind and the snow it looks like that tent benefited both the welding and the weldor! Thanks for the suggestions and help.DB
