Well with all these different tungsten materials. What do you all think is the best tungsten for all around welding applications? So far besides the traditional red and green tungsten. I've  been using the gray and e3 purple tungsten. I have few samples of the layzr lime  but  haven't  got around to it yet. The e3 tungsten is a bit pricey though and may want to try some others. The e3 works, well. Just, harder to break. I wasted a part of it the  first time trying  to break it. I now grind it before breaking it. I heard some good reviews on the blue ones, though the one with good deals were from china?

Reply:Nice vid! I wish he went  more in depth with ac  and high frequency. Lath seems to look good. But not sure with it's  ac high frequency  aluminum performance
Reply:In my experience:DC = 2% thoriated (red) by farAC = 2% Lanthanated (blue)
Reply:Try zerconiated for ac it holds it's ball real good, but 1/8 only goes to 200amps if that more like 185. And red for DC
Reply:Personally I like Radnor E3 for pretty much everything.  The only other tungsten I use is 2% lanthanated.--Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow
Reply:i run 5/32 zircon stuff(like i can spell it im a welder lol) for alu never an issue. 1/8 2% thori for steel and stainless if im doing a root in thick mat i will switch to 3/32 thor i had a 3/32 e3 it works i just found it really brittle when doing lift arc or scratch start tig and the tip would wear off faster the  the thori stuffHigh Octane Welding

Reply:It depends on what type of machine you are using. Zirconiated used to the preferred tungsten on AC transformer machines because it will handle more heat than pure tungsten. 2% Thoriated is still preferred by many but is being phased out by  suppliers because of slight radiation issues. There are several new tungstens now and I've heard good and bad on them depending who you listen to.
Reply:I really like the E3 purple.

Reply:I do the same. Grind both ends for thoriated but only one side for anything else.I have tried 2% ceriated (do not hold up to high current as well as lanthanated), 1.5% lanthanated (almost the same as 2% ceriated), 0.8% zirconiated (in my machine which is an inverter it sucks) and 2% lanthanated (so far the best for AC).I have yet to try E3 or some other mix.For DC although ceriated and lanthanated hold up pretty well, the moment you touch the puddle they are contaminated, the thoriated withstands contamination a lot better. Finally is seems tungsten quality plays almost as big a part as the type, I have experienced big variations in performance from different brands.

Reply:I have had great luck with red from TBi industries (made in Germany)I have bought lots of tungsten from CK Worldwide only to find they are sourced from China and are of mediocre quality, the blue ones I got on ebay from 3shop-river were just fine though.
Reply:on ac it depends i use a syncro250 and usually set it to 250amps sometimes i just crank it up and control with the foot pedal. dc is usually under 200 at work on the syncro at my shop i only have a xmt with with no pedal so it rarely goes above 160ampsHigh Octane Welding
Reply:I think over the last 4 years I just buy from DGP only for the quality since I'm the only welder so my tungsten last for a while. I also pretty much use there trimix for all DC and sometimes AC along with red and blue. I have found all the tungsten does react different depending on ratio, freq and wave form (AC Dynasty 350).(2) Miller Dynasty 350 (1) Miller 250x (1) Torchmate 4x4 with PM 45

Reply:Originally Posted by shovelonThat pretty much sums it up for me. Red is the best on DC period. Blue for DC is great. I do use TriMix(white), or E3(purple) in place of blue though. They reform the ball on the tip rather quickly if you dip the tungsten slightly as opposed to blue which takes a loooong time to ball and holds it for days, but will take an equally long time to reball if dipped slightly. E3 is good for newbies. I get my red and blue from HTP/USAweld and have been very happy with the price and quality. Still on the fence with their Quadmix. Can't get it to ball correctly unless I put my machines on SineWave. You can buy singles at HTP/USAweld and get free shipping for $35. Choose the ones you want to test and kill them off. Me, I grind DC tungstens at both ends needle sharp and swap ends when fouled. AC tungstens on one end only as balled tips can't be inserted into the collet body. This way we keep them identified.
Reply:Originally Posted by Welder DaveDon't you mean blue for AC? Interestingly Weldcraft has stopped supplying thoriated and their tungstens come from China as well. I know guys who like pointed red(thoriated) tungstens using AC on an inverter.
Reply:I totally agree though for an all around best tungsten nothing beats the 2% thoriated red band!
Reply:Originally Posted by 7A749Yeah, that was a killer deal on that tungsten from weldingpup. I think I have 14 packs of red 3/32"Enough to last me till the end most likely. I'm glad you got some use out of the 1/8" I sent you. I still have packs and packs of it.For the OP, I'm not a pro, but I like the TriMix purple on my inverter for AC, quality red 2% Thoriated on anything DC.I've tried the blue on my 350, but prefer purple. Of course, I'm not doing technical, important welding like some of the big dogs here are doing.Found the blue works very nicely on since wave machines like a Syncrowave 250 on AC. Held a point well and balled consistently. At least in my limited experience.
Reply:Originally Posted by shovelonI should be fine for quite a few years Steve. ThanksE3 purple forms a ball readily and keeps it nicely. I have a bunch of it that I hand out to my beginners and they do well with it. Did Amy put any surprises in the tungstens she sent you?

Reply:Well I'm  starting to really like the e3 tungsten. It has good ac high frequency performance as so as in dc. Also seems impervious  to 2 dips and doesn't  contaminate into the weld like the red thoriated. I rarely dip but at times when fatigue on hard to reach tight  spaces where I'm  unable to brace with a mirror weld it happens. I'm  now saving my e3 tungsten for outside field work. And the red thoriated  to strictly in shop work until i purchase  more e3. I think  on monday I'll  test out the layzr lime.
Reply:I tested the layzr tungsten today. Seems to perform better on dc. Haven't tried the layzr on ac yet With  the layzr puddle movement and manipulation seems to be direct and pinpoint. The puddle reaction time to movement seems to be instantaneous, especially on vertical  slopes and bevel edges. The e3 is good but there is some lag compared to the layzr imo
