I am a new welding student and I just completed my first quarter of school. I have only worked on SMAW and Oxy-fuel but so far I love it. I was looking into Arc welders to buy so I can practice at home and play around with some project ideas I have but am running into some difficulty. Most of the equipment Im finding for sale is cheap looking Chinese stuff. The prices are good, but when compared to the cost of the Miller or Lincoln Electric equipment It seems too cheap. Are my suspicions that I would wind up disappointed with my purchase true, if I go the cheap route. And does anyone have a good recommendation for me. I'm a student, so I don't have alot of cash, but I'm willing to hold out and save a little more up if that's the better choice. Thanx.Last edited by billy32; 12-17-2012 at 12:14 AM.
Reply:Look on CL for used. You can usually find name brand older gear for equal or less money. Take a minute and add you location to your User CP at the top left and someone might have a few suggestions about good used gear near you.As far as the cheap ones keep a few things in mind. One if/when it breaks, if it's out of warranty, don't expect that it will be easy to repair. Treat it as "disposable". Also a lot of these companies have a very bad rep here. In the past there were a lot of issues with bad machines and very poor customer service when there were problems. Also the companies had a reputation of moving and deleting threads having to do with problems so there isn't a lot of evidence of these issues. They have thier place, but do your home work and be aware of the issues before hand..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:The chinese equipment is aweful! I purchased used american(blue) mig and tig welders that were at least 10 years old. They work great to this day 5 years later. I purchased a brand new chinese plasma cutter that worked for 1 minute before I heard a pop and it started to smoke. The cutter was under warranty and the company sent me another one. As soon as I got it unboxed I tried it out. This time the lead caught on fire. Remember you get what you pay for. I would go with a used Lincoln or Miller instead of a new Chinese machine.*************************************Mike AccardiHenderson, [email protected] 250XLincoln Weldpack HDMiller Syncrowave 180 SD************************************* |
