I have some questions on my welding certification I just obtained through arcet (stick unlimited thickness) after I welded the test and turned it in I realized that it "will not enter me into the AWS certified welder program" considering this is my first time obtaining a certification on my own and not employer sponsor, can anyone explain this? Is it not beneficial to get certified this way? I just want to make sure before I take anymore welding tests on my own.Thank you!
Reply:I titled it arcet or arc3 gases because they recently changed their name to that, just fyi
Reply:Where are you located? I'm not really sure what you mean by entering into the AWS certified program??? I love it when people ask "Are you a certified welder?" I answer, "Maybe, Yes, No" what certification are you asking about? Do you just ask any "doctor" to do your brain surgery? I hope not, you might be asking a Podiatrist to open up the wrong end of the body that they have spent years training on. Welding certifications aren't like a licence to weld. They are extreemly specific for process, material type and shape (pipe vs structural vs plate) joint type and orientation (flat/horizontal/vertical/overhead), thickness, etc. Even industry and then they are only good for so long as you keep up on doing that which was tested. That being said, having passed a weld test by whichever governing body is just a feather in your cap that shows people you HAVE done something which was tested by a third party, not that you necessarily CAN do what they need. Although if you can pass a 6GR pipe test, you can probably pass any test. Having any certicifation may get you an interview, the rest is up to you to prove again.Last edited by xryan; 04-14-2016 at 03:52 PM.RyanMiller Multimatic 200 tig/spool gun/wireless remoteMillermatic 350P, Bernard/XR Python gunsMiller Dynasty 350, Coolmate 3.5 & wireless remoteCK WF1 TIG wire feederMiller Spectrum 375 XtremeOptrel e684Miller Digital EliteMiller Weld-Mask

Reply:I believe the OP is asking about the AWS Certified Welder certification which can be checked online. This test must be taken at an AWS accredited testing facility where your results, application, and fee are then sent to the AWS and they send you a wallet card stating that you passed the test. You must have this record maintained ever 6 months though ... or its useless. I am not certain that the maintenance must also be done at an accredited testing facility which is another fee. http://www.aws.org/certification/det...welder-programAWS CWI xxxx21711968 SA200 Originally Posted by WelderMike I hate being bipolar, It's awesome.

They don't run an AWS test facility, at least not in Virginia.30+ yrs Army Infantry & Field Artillery, 25 yrs agoMiller 350LX Tig Runner TA 210, spool gunLincoln 250/250 IdealArcESAB PCM 500i PlasmaKazoo 30" vert BSKazoo 9x16 horiz BSClausing 12x24 lathe20T Air Press
Reply:Jerry, they have an independent certification program. You buy the coupons from them and weld the test up to whichever procedure your certifying in. Take the test back and they have an AWS certified CWI who works for them that picks the tests up every Friday that tests the plates. Coupons are 25.00, test fees are 150.00. A lot of independent contractors and construction companies go this route. Most employers test in house anyways and the certified employees records are kept in house, even when the employee leaves the job they can't take the certification with them, just the experience.Last edited by hotshot01; 04-17-2016 at 10:39 PM. |
