Just got another forum, a guy talking about not being able to remove a drain plug from his engine, and yes full of oil. Of course one guy telling him "no problem just weld a nut on the plug". My thoughts are Don't do it...........any opinions?
Reply:I have done that many times myself. it seems to work just fine.

Reply:The oil will cool the back off the weld very easily.IMOJust a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Trump/Carson 2016-2024
Reply:In fear of doing more damage, I'd probabaly just drill through the center of the plug/bolt.  drill it w/ proper size drill so you can tap it for a pipe plug
Reply:If your worried about an explosion don't, not going to get hot enough.Measure with a micrometre, mark with chalk,  cut with a torch.Never force anything...just get a bigger hammer.RoyOld Airco buzz box approx 1974Lincoln mig pack 15Lincoln 175 square wave1954 9" south bend lathe
Reply:Put a nut that fits over the existing plug and weld it. Bigger hex means more leverage done many usually just leave it and re use the plugMillermatic 252millermatic 175miller 300 Thunderboltlincoln ranger 250smith torcheslots of bfh'sIf it dont fit get a bigger hammer
Reply:I don't see a problem with it. Try chiseling it off first with a chisel and hammer tho
Reply:Plenty of way's to fix it. Depends on the customer.  If a walmart or such shop stripped it, they (or any other shop) should fix it.  If not, there are many drain fix kits.  Yes you can weld a new one on, but in my opinion that wuld be the last resort.

Reply:Someone probably took a adjustable wrench to it and kinda striped it then took a 12 point to it and jacked it up
Reply:Well, we all know what crescent wrenches, pipe wrenches and visegrips in the wrong hands can do.                                            MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw

Reply:Thing you do have to watch out for is faulty carbs or injectors pumping to much fuel or stuck float needles that cause gasoline and vapors to accumulate in the oil pan. In extreme cases they have exploded.  Just check it first.
Reply:Also be sure the oil pan is metal.  There are fiberglass ones out there you know.
Reply:If it has an exposed head, little pipe wrenches can save the day.  I've done it more than once.  Not on a drain plug though...My name's not Jim....

Reply:home : news : newsShareJanuary 23, 20151/13/2014 9:43:00 AMUPDATE: One injured in morning explosion at shopFirefighters work to douse the fire.Numerous rescue vehicles were on location for the morning fire.+ view more photosBrenda Poe and Lois StephensFire department and police officials were on the scene of an explosion Monday morning around 9 a.m. containing a fire at Auto Tech Electronics/Bobby's Automotive located at 1100 Lucille, behind Ayala's Tire. The area of Texas Blvd. just north of Rose Drive was blocked off for about three blocks, until parents of the day care center next door could pick up their children.Residents of the area reported a loud explosion was heard, followed by a cloud of white, then black smoke, and flames. At least two vehicles outside and reportedly several vehicles inside have been damaged. AFD Fire Marshal Patrick Thomas said one man was injured badly by the explosion and fire, having been transported to San Antonio by HALO-Flight."When we arrived, one person was on the ground across the street, having been rescued by two witnesses," Thomas said. "The man apparently when in and out of the shop several times before passing out."Thomas said the man had severe burns to both legs and his right hand, with singeing to the hairs of his face area."He had a welding mask on at the time of the explosion, and frankly that probably saved his life," Thomas said. "The helmet melted."Thomas said the man also had a laceration to his lower right abdomen that medics thought had caused some internal bleeding. The fire was extinguished within 15 minutes of the departments arrival, but Thomas said the official cause of the fire and explosion won't be known until he can speak to the man.Witnesses at the scene reported he was the only one working and had been seen welding."I only hope that he pulls through this," Thomas said.Thomas also praised the employees of the day care center next door to the shop on Lucille."The center had a fire evacuation plan that they activated very well, keeping the children safe," Thomas said.It turned out that he was welding on the car's oil pan?
Reply:Use the rubber washers with the steel ring around them as well. They seal awesome on drain plugs and you don't have to torque the crap out of the bolts to get them to stop leaking. Way better than copper washers.

Reply:Gases Explode Liquids Burn both need Oxygen to do that! so if the oil pan is full of oil and welding on the bottom (where drain plug should be) should be no problem unless you burn through the oil pan. my guess with the man welding on the oil pan is he was trying to fix a rusted oil pan and it flashed and exploded!Ypop
Reply:Use a stripped bolt remover, they work like a charm. Last time I did the clutch in my car I was greeted with a flywheel bolt that was perfectly round, how they did it I have no clue. To make matters worse the bolt had a very shallow head, like 3/16" or less. Tapped a stripped bolt remover on there and carefully twisted it right out.
Reply:As you might be able to tell Brian with more experience there are more options but it does not mean any of them will work for the guy with little. How a guy can see all outcomes and say something will not blow I just don't know. I know I am thinking hard about welding on a oil can I need to repair.
Reply:I bet something has been done to the oil pan by now.12v battery, jumper cables, and a 6013.I only have a facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/pages/VPT/244788508917829
