I've had a job come in that requires attaching 4 legs to a table frame. The table frame is a simple rectangle made from the same 1" aluminum tube. I need to attach (via a screw-in method) a leg at each of the 4 corners of this table frame. Could someone point me towards a place where I can source fittings that would hopefully work easily with 1" tube? Reply:electrical supplyhouse will have aluminum threaded couplings you can weld into the corners and just thread the pipe into them, they come in many sizes, whatever you need..
Reply:would probably utilize rivnuts.  http://www.rivnut.com/rivnut-cardinal-components.html
Reply:Kings Archeticual Metal may have alum flanges, but not sure in 1". McMaster Carr would also if they exist.
Reply:I'm not a big fan of aluminum threads if they need to come apart regularly, too much trouble with galling. If it's one assembly and never to come apart it should be fine though.

Reply:Sorry,I thought you were talking about floor flanges.
Reply:Rivnuts are what you want. This is my homemade tool used with an impact. you can get by with just a ratchet to mushroom the rivnut inside the tubing. The rivnut shown is a heavy wall 3/8-16, zinc plated steel. click on links for larger view. they also make aluminum rivnuts that will be much easier to seat. https://goo.gl/photos/JirK3e28iAwgNQuf6https://goo.gl/photos/9Ftdu9UHU4xy3egX7https://goo.gl/photos/Wn5Qf3JHbjd97YVr7I use rivnuts all the time to mount brackets inside enclosed tubing where I don't have access to the back side to weld a heavy hex nut. https://goo.gl/photos/iTBP6gKev3XsRBxt8Last edited by Jimmy_pop; 04-28-2016 at 02:50 PM.
Reply:both these rivnuts are 3/8-16 steel. one is the heavy wall version. It sits about 1/16 above the surface but has alot of clamping area. The other almost sits flush with the surface. Either version requires a 1/2" drilled hole.

Reply:Originally Posted by Jimmy_popI've pulled tons of these with and without using a spin gun. Dont be fooled by the home brew welded wrench. I am quite sure I can keep up with the spin-pull-spin guns. I had the spin setup and it was not reliable and super finicky. Impact I can walk anywhere in the shop or around the weld table without a hose attached. The pneumatic spin gun sits in the drawer. The spin guns use a simple socket head cap screw to pull the rivet. Infact, this is the mandrel kit I robbed from the spin gun kit, just welded a handle on it and use an impact instead of the spin gun. It is way waay better. I'll try to make a video sometime and start a new thread.
