Welding on some quarter inch stainless TIG. Welded around 75 amps I think and had 15 cfh and was using 3/32 tungsten. I was wondering what the scratching was on the weld do I push to hard on the cup??!? Lincoln 140 Pak MIG Everlast powerarc 140 STLincoln Tombstone
Reply:Could be, I do not set the cup on the weld. Just the way I learned.ChrisAuction Addict
Reply:Thick stainless like that at those amps is deceptive. It looks pretty, but isn't real world. If you were welding true 1/4" stock, you'd need a lot more amps than you are using. If you were welding material appropriate for 75 amps, I doubt you'd be getting those results 1st time out. Most important thing with stainless is usually heat control. You aren't going to learn that with low amps on thick material. You probably want to work on something like 14 ga. It's a good compromise between cost and material that you have to back gas all the time. 16 ga is doable, but you have to start watching the back or you need to back gas or shield the back. 1/8" is great, but kind of pricy..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:Hot and Fast is the rule of thumb for SS. Turn amps up to around 120 move fast forward let the heat do all the welding , don't go to wide with weld cause that will slow forward movement.  Try this a few times if to much then turn down a little, but remember Hot and fast forward Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:So I gather from the comments, a weave such as the OP chose, is not recommended (in the interest of keeping heat down).30+ yrs Army Infantry & Field Artillery, 25 yrs agoMiller 350LX Tig Runner TA 210, spool gunLincoln 250/250 IdealArcESAB PCM 500i PlasmaKazoo 30"  vert BSKazoo 9x16 horiz BSClausing 12x24 lathe20T Air Press

Reply:Originally Posted by Bigrich954rryou can weave on stainless steel but the pic posted are not really a good way to judge welding on stainless steel they are more of just a cover pass/ drawing on it then welding it
Reply:Originally Posted by weldermikeOp's weld is not a great example but hes trying. Your answer is totally false tho.

Reply:There are a lot of variations on tig weaving, you can freehand it, walk the cup, etc etc, but you are feeding filler wire as you move along and not just drawing over your last weld/welds.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
