Hi, I am a beginner MIG welder and have always wondered how you can tell if your penetration and fusion is good? I have found some information on penetration but not so much good fusion.. how can you tell?
Reply:Do some fillet weld break tests and you'll know.
Reply:4 lb mini sledge will let you know pretty fast.AWS CWI xxxx21711968 SA200 Originally Posted by WelderMike I hate being bipolar, It's awesome.
Reply:See if it breaks with a sledge in a vise OR do a dye test. Jody at Welding Tips and Tricks has a video on how to do that. It takes a while and is a little tricky but doesn't cost anything other than a small bottle of Naval Jelly. It's pretty interesting to see the actual weld bead penetration. Also Google weld testing.
Reply:Look for any bit of cold lap on the edges of the weld. Cold lap is often visible to the naked eye, where it looks like the weld just kind of sits on the work piece. It will break with a hammer in a vise fairly easily. |
