I need to install some expanded on a existing hand rail but they dont want it to go from floor to rail, there will be about 4 inches open on the top and bottom. I have seen channel for thin metals used on displays and signs but I know my local supplier doesn't sell it. Any leads?
Reply:You could put 'hairpins' around it. That is a piece of sheet metal bent over 180 degrees onto itself. It is used for edging screen grills, etc. You can use HVAC S-cleats too. Probably readily available
Reply:It needs to be plain steel(not getting painted) Im guess the screen parts are aluminum and most hvac stuff is galv
Reply:Way back when, we used thin angle flashing, maybe 3/4" or 1", and simply smashed it flat along the edges to compress and hold it in place.City of L.A. Reply:I am currently modifying a small trailer to fit as a welding cart, and I used 18 gauge sheet metal to make side panels.  To deal with the sharp edge, I cut to length, a 5/8” pipe, and then I cut a notch along it's length which was then pressed into the edge of the sheet metal.  I then welded the pipe to the sheet, and ground to a smooth transition.  It lent a good deal more rigidity to the panel along with a more comfortable rounded edge.   I think steel boat builders use this same method when they must deal with edges.
Reply:Search for expanded metal u-edging.  You'll find it."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
