Doing a third set of brakes. This is for a 66 Biscayne. I have already done a set for a 66 Impala and did a set for my 65 Impala using all GM parts.  Not really going to be much welding. Mostly just a little fab work.. Attached Images

Reply:How does one engineer something like that?
Reply:whats gona stop the caliper from spinning around, and that 1 bolt wont hold when you brake...Of all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...
Reply:The parachute will stop him lol
Reply:Ha ha! I ain't done yet Mr roadkillbob. These photos may give a little more clarity.. Attached Images
Reply:Can we get more photos of the lathe? Can I get more photos of the lathe?
Reply:jmink, that'll work! You got top notch fab skills and ingenuity.....I already know why you don't offer kits, because in a panic stop, folks will twist the spindles out of their ball joints and then sue .
Reply:Looks good. Yes more pics!
Reply:It's a 1946 Clausing lathe.. It was a freebie that a friend gave me. I had to put a motor on it. Attached Images
Reply:I will bring an extra bat and we can go after the guy that put it on that base. I kinda dig the lathe though.
Reply:How tight of a tolerance can it hold?
Reply:The lathe is pretty worn out. Works ok for spacers and such and it needs a new 3 jaw chuck.. If i need something pretty close I put the 4 jaw on and indicate it in.....  Cant believe you guys are bashing my base.  It's what I had to work with at the time 😜.  For the precision stuff I use the lathes at work...

Reply:Really the hardest part of doing this was finding something with 11/16"-16 tpi to make the thread insert out of... I finally found out that one 1972 Chevy trucks wheel studs are that thread.  Got them from NAPA...  I guess I could have made some..
Reply:Cant believe you guys are bashing my base..[/QUOTE]I think you mean guy? I wouldn't turn that lath down. No way. I want one!!!

Reply:Originally Posted by roadkillbobbah, that looks a bit more beefier....is it an engineered design or one that you have used before?...theres alot of force on them thare brakes..and a ton of liability if they dont work...wouldnt it be easier to just get a complete set up from a chevelle that had front disc brakes and just pop the ball joints and install....nice n safe....
Reply:If you stop and think about it, the rotational force is probably well controlled with the setup he's made.Wasn't much holding the backing plate on the old Moostangs, or just about any other type of truck/car with drum brakes.  You'd be surprised at how much torque a few bolts will withstand.  And the old drum brakes would apply one heck of a lot of force, more than brake calipers I believe.  Near as I remember, the only reason for the switch to disc brakes was less fade when hot.  Drum brakes will throw you through the window in a panic stop, nothing like them for stopping power."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:people confuse braking power for being able to lock the wheels up.    they are completely different thingsVantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.First, nice setup. To me it looks like it is beefier than a factory style. Second, in my over 20 years of bending wrenches and changing brakes I have never worked on a set of front drum brakes.HF 90 Amp Flux Core Customized.
Reply:Working on drum brakes is a blast, especially the springs! May that's because I never had the correct tool.. I always used a screwdriver or channel locks. 😖
