Not sure how much you're going to be able to get from the pics, but this was my second shot at burning some rods on the Bobcat 225. Once again, I was mainly using 7018, but I did get my hands on an old 6010. That 6010 is nasty compared to a 7018. Sparks and stuff went flying everywhere, and it seemed harder to keep the puddle going.I set out to do a couple of things here: practice making better beads, and scratch more reliable arcs. I think I've got the bead part down, but the scratching is still going to take a while. That's why there's all that porosity- all those failed arcs. Two issues that I think affected it were that I still tend to jump a little (and break the arc) when I first see it ignite, and that when I started working on arcs the metal was pretty heavily coated with contaminants again. Reply:What size rods you running, at what amperage?Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Trump/Carson 2016-2024
Reply:I don't know where you got that piece of steel, but with all those holes it would make a perfect  fire grate  for a fancy fire ring

Reply:The results of my experimenting with that 6010. Not too pretty. It seems to have behaved better on the rusted parts than those 7018s did, though. Much less porosity.I got to playing around with this one. The lower parts are new, while the upper was from my previous practice runs. The ground part at the bottom was from the previous run.I think this was the last clean strike I got, because I was running out of clean metal to work with.I ran three good beads side by side, then screwed them up by trying to strike arcs on top of them. The metal surrounding it is cleaner in these shots than when I was actually working it, because I went over it a little too thoroughly with a wire brush wheel. Attached Images
Reply:I think you will be MUCH better off using a piece of flat strap, angle iron, plate, tube or whatever... instead of that piece of grate. You are making it twice as hard as it is, which will not make you twice as good... It will just take you twice as much time and practice to reach the same level of proficiency!Mikel
