I just got a harbor freight mini lathe. I took out the jaws, and now I can't get them to go back in and be centered. the instruction manual says the jaws are numbered 1, 2, 3, they are not, they are labedl something like 341, 378 and 278, the spots in the jaw are metal stamped 1, 2, 3. I followed the instructions about putting in one at a time and still no luck, any tips? thanks!
Reply:It is tough if you can't figure out what goes in first.  I usually hold all three in at the same time, Then turn the screw backward until the no. one falls. When it falls into place I reverse and catch all the jaws. Just play with it.  The combinations are finite, 18 I think.  Then mark the order.
Reply:Put the jaws next to each other with the threaded side facing you. Have a look at the distance from the ege of the jaw to the first thread, order them from shortest too longest distance. The one with the shortest distance from edge to the thread goes first. I would put this one in first and as tapwelder suggested screw it backwards until it drops, then screw it forward and pick it up, move to the next one checking every part turn until it grabs, then do the same with the third (and fourth if a 4 jaw). Hopefully this works for you, then number them and it will be easy next time.Cheers Andrew
Reply:Look at the threads on the jaws, they all start at different times, the closest to the jaw face is No1 then 2 ...
Reply:Look at the set of 3 on the left, #2 and #3 look identical to me.Comparing this to the outside set of jaws labeled a, b, c there is an obvious difference in thread height!could I have bought this new machine with the wrong set of inside jaws? harbor freight quality control is not that good if that is the case!i've never actually used this machine yet, so it's not like it was working for sure and suddendly it is not.
Reply:good luck ! did the same damn thing myself. took quite a bit of time as mine werent labeled either.MM 251MM 135Lincoln Pro cut 55Bobcat 250Miller Thunderbolt ac/dcolder ac forneyJackson nexgen 3n13-Smith OP setups97 Dodge dieselMakita chopsawJet swivel head bandsawlincoln tig 300/30030a spoolgunpuma port. gas air comp.
Reply:I hate to say it, but the threads on 2 and 3 look to be the same.Which would mean that you have the wrong number 3 jaw.
Reply:judging by the numbers initially listed.  perhaps he is missing jaw 1.  Did that set work before you took them out?Last edited by tapwelder; 01-21-2013 at 01:05 PM.
Reply:yep I'm pretty sure they gave me the wrong jaw because the metal stampings say 1, 3, 3, external set say 1, 2, 3. gotta call and complain. never used the set before I took them out, because first job I had I needed the external jaws. my guess is they were messed up to begin with.
Reply:Perhaps the last two number match the jaw with the chuck.  So you should have 178.
Reply:they not numbered?  damn chinese bastardstackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/

Reply:If the pictured jaws were as identical as they might appear, why would they numbered differently? Who knows ...While annoying, it would be fairly quick to systematically try all the possible combinations for assembling your chuck:You start with 3 jaw choices for the chuck's slot #1, leaving you with only 2 choices from the remaining jaws for slot #2, which fixes the jaw choice for chuck slot #3. There are only 3*2*1=6 possible ways to assemble the chuck in total.XMT304 (school)SP125+ (home)HF 4x6 BandsawGood judgement comes from experience and much of that comes from bad judgement.

Reply:Hi, either way, jaws 2 & 3 both look the same no matter which end you have on top.I wouldn't mind betting that someone else has returned a chuck to the supplier with the same problem. It is highly unlikely that the supplier would have taken the chuck out of the box, or off the machine if it was a demo model, and swapped one of the jaws with another chuck.....not logical, but a more likely happening would have to be at the source, back in China where the chuck was assembled, and so the supplier has not got any other option but to exchange the chuck for some other stocked one and return the chuck to China at their expense.....it's a warranty case.If it was a second hand buy and no warranty, then you'd have to either buy a set of replacement jaws or regrind the nose of each of them to make them close togeher, probably losing the case hardening in the process......hard facing welding and regrinding to one of the jaws would probably work better.Ian.
