U-joints and Grease Fittings

Just bought a set of Ø1.375" U-joints for my Dana 60 Front axle. Only problem - no grease fittings. The casting has a place to install the grease fittings, but I am stuck on deciding whether to drill them out and install the grease fitting, or leave them as they are.You can clearly see that the place to install the fitting is there, and the holes are already 1/2 way drilled, but I cannot seem to make up my mind. I ended up buying ones with lifetime warranty (I don't have a great history with u-joints) just in case. However, I know that regularly greasing them will increase the life of the joint - and I can always talk the monkey behind the desk into replacing themMy question is, is it worth it?I break things for a living...
Reply:Steering knuckle U-joints on the 60 have the grease fitting on the center hub portion in the corner of the cross.  Consider buying a brand name U-joint from any shop other than Autozone and it will come with the fitting.  Spicer U-joints are the best if you can get your hands on them, Precision is an acceptable US made substitute.  They are expensive and will run you close to $65 a side.
Reply:Some of the U-joints that DODGE use's dont have the Zirk. You have to get a needle type greaser with a zirk on it. Its kinda like a basketball inflator but made for the old school grease fittings.Where you see the hole drilled for a zirk, does it go all the way thru? If it does, you can grease it with the needle. They cost about $3 from any auto supply and fit on your regular grease gun.Hope that helps some.

Reply:Do not but the autozone u-joints, they do not last. Genuine Spicer is the only way to fly. Some front axle joints have a fitting in the cap, but you will need a needle adapter for your gun. I suggest you go to a real parts house and tell them your application and they will give you the propper joint. I have been down this road with Jeep's and F-250's with big tires and big power.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
