spatter spray or nozzle gel

i have a miller 135 mig welder i do alot of welding i get a lot of spatter on the outside of the nozzle so my local tsc sells nozzle gel and spatter spray both are in the price range of 9 dollars so i was thinking should i try nozzle gel because heard it's good and it saves a lot of contact tips i've used hobart spatter spray before and its good i was just wondering how good nozzle gel is

Reply:I've used the gel, it does work but it's really messy, & slippery on the floor.And if you use too much it will give you porosity because the gas ports in the gun get clogged.I do use spray on the parts themselves if I can't have spatter on them.If you get your machine set up right, you really don't need either though.I generally never use it.I have a mostly full tub around here someplace, if you are close enough to me you can have it.Buy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.
Reply:I use the tub of gel. But I purchased a new, empty, quart paint can because by the time I use it all, the plastic tub usually cracks. I wait until the mig tip and nozzle are hot, then I dip it, then let it drain and give it a couple of shakes. I never had a problem with it clogging. Reply:I use the gel on my gun and spray wen it is called for on the weldment.  if you are getting too much junk on the outside of your gun and having to apply gel every 3-4 welds then something is wrong.  I do the same as stick man.  I get the nozzle hot and the dunk and drip.  I also cut a hole in a lid for the gel and just dunk in the hole.  it save time removing the lid and keeps debris from getting in your gel.
