Hello everyone I'm New here. I could use some help with an old Emerson 20/180 arc welder. The welder stopped working the other day after I got a rod stuck to my work. I checked the electric source and have 220 coming into the unit and past the on/off switch but no hum sound from the unit just the fan running. I looked for obvious burn out on the copper wire coil but nothing shows up. All connections look good. So since there are really no moving parts the overload must be bad or a wire is burned off or shorted out somewhere in the coil. Doesn't look too complicated to un wind the coils but is it worth the effort. Any help to get this up and running again would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Mr Twister
Reply:Simple meter checks should determine if the coils are open or complete. then with power on, do we have the right voltage at the primary and secondary coils. If transformer is not humming. I would look at the primary circuits from the line switch to the coils. Something is open.More information on how this welder controls the weld output would be helpful. Good pictures are helpful.
