Reading another thread made me think about the SA200 I've got apart right now. The main armature has what appears to be a light coat of red paint on it (commutator is clean). This is the first machine I've had apart this far, and I was wondering if that paint is from the factory. If not, is it hurting anything?
Reply:You can go to a site like weldmart and look at their welding machine parts and you should see about the same color red paint as I think you describe in your post. Its a dip and bake process for insulation on the armature and fields etc. A must have item I think. But - - - the company I'm presently working for just got one of it's 200D's worked on by a local repair center and when I looked at it this thing looked like they just spray painted the inside of the generator with orange-red primer. I was not impressed to say the least. IMO this stuff does nothing but helps hold in the heat If you could post a pic maybe someone could tell you better but if its dip and bake then its an electrical necessity IMO, but if its sprayed in there then I would not be that impressed. (again IMO )Good luck
Reply:Red is the normal color of most electrical insulating varnishes but it can be found in green, amber, clear and other colors. Electric motor shops dip or spray it on then bake it in a vacuum type oven. At most any electric motor shop, Graingers, or Fastenal you can get the red electric motor insulating varnish in red or also green epoxy or clear acrylic in rattle cans for small touch up jobs too that will just air dry. http://www.sprayon.com/products/red_insulating_varnishhttp://www.sprayon.com/products/gree...lating_varnishhttp://sprayon-insulatingvarnish.com/aerosol.html http://www.dolphs.com/pdfs/Dol_VarnishsResin_chart.pdf
Reply:Thanks for your replies. I won't give it another thought.
Reply:What you are seeing is Glyptal 1201. It is an insulating varnish that was made by General Electric. The Glyptal Division spun off in 1985 but the 1201 can still be purchased and used for touch-ups and re-coating.Jim |
