Question for you guys[ame]http://www.amazon.com/DEWALT-DC920KA-18-Volt-2-Inch-Cordless/dp/B000H4I5UG[/ame]I have a DeWALT DC920KA 18V XRP cordless drill/driver that I have owned for probably about 7 years.  It doesn't get used everyday, but has seen occasional tough use.  What I call tough might be what some guys call light though. This past weekend I had to drill a 7/16in hole.  I grabbed a 7/16 round shank regular twist drill, loosened the drill chuck, slid in the drill bit and started tightening it up.  The drill chuck began to get tight like always, except instead of fully tightening up, it just slipped in the direction of tightening and loosened up.  It felt like when a machine screw or bolt threads into a threaded hole that is about to strip.  It gets close to tight, and right as you think you're about to get it good and snug, it "slips" and becomes loose again.I have used this drill so many times over the years and I can't remember it ever doing this before.  Is the drill chuck worn out?I'm thinking I'll try and tighten up on a smaller OD drill bit to see if it does the same thing.  It was close to 30degrees outside if that matters.  Is the chuck designed to slip if there's too much torque when tightening?I know a lot of guys have run the same drill/driver so I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.  I'm a little worried that my once "new", now "old and faithful" drill/driver is in trouble. Before I say new, I should say that I bought it 7 or so years ago factory refurbished from DeWALT.
Reply:You probably need a new chuck. The keyless ones are prone to failure after a while. I'm a big fan of keyed chucks plus they're cheaper. Just go to the store and pick up a new chuck, they're cheap and it doesn't have to be DeWalt. Or take one off another drill. I got a 1/2" Jacob's chuck for $15 a while back. Don't remember where I bought it from though... If you're going to replace it, the screw that holds the chuck in is left-hand threaded! After the screw comes out, the chuck needs to be unscrewed which can be tricky. I'm sure there's plenty of help on YouTube for you on replacing a chuck.
Reply:Some have the lock screw, some are different.  Most of them have failed on me and I replace them with a Keyed chuck. I get instructions on utube to remove the chuck, depending on the model.  Some just require a big allen wrench tightened up in the jaws, some have the torx lock screw. I go through 3 or 4 18V DeWalts drills a year, not their fault I abuse them and have tried all brands.
Reply:This is the replacement chuck that comes up from ereplacementparts.comhttp://www.ereplacementparts.com/key...-p-112882.htmlI wish I could see a photo of it showing the push-lock-on and pull-lock-off functionality of the drill chuck that came factory stock on my DC920KA.
Reply:Bought a factory replacement chuck off Amazon.  Should be good.
