My friend and I are building a 500 gallon reverse flow cooker out of a propane tank. Time is almost here to build the first fire and start the seasoning process. He says we have to have final paint on the tank before we fire because "pores" will open in the tank metal and if we paint after the "pores" open and close the paint won't stick. Maybe expansion and contraction? So what's the deal? This for real or Internet made up?Trailblazer 302G12VS Extreme Miller SD180Coolmate 4Miller 251Miller 175Victor OAHypertherm 380Milling MachineLatheBandsaw
Reply:It will be whatever he will PAY to try and make it.Let him waste his money on paint and save yours for the meat you will cook on it.
Reply:The only thing I could think of is that when heated the metal expands and seeps out whatever oil/ contaminants there is inside and thats why the paint wouldn't stick so you probably just need to clean or degrease it well after.  i've never had this problem though.
Reply:I don't really know what will happen either way, but if you paint first (which is what I would probably do, not overthinking the "pore opening" thing...), and if the pores do open, won't the paint open up (pore holes) with the metal, resulting in open areas in the paint??Rich
Reply:How much is He thinking the pores will open up? Big enough for Clearasil?
Reply:The paint that is on there is not likely a high heat paint in the first place and probable peel off with a good burn off. You really need get the tank hot enough to burn of the oils and stink left in the tank anyways.  I do not think you want a propane smell on the meat you are cooking.Klutch 220si mig , stick, and dc tigHobart 140 AHP ALPHA 200X 2016Lotos LTP5000DSmith O/P
Reply:We did a small burn to get rid of the stuff that makes the smell they add to the propane. We ground the existing paint off on the bottom before mounting it on the trailer and painted the areas that would be difficult to get to. Part of the seasoning process is to get the temp high to burn anything out that might remain. I was just curious about the pore thing? Sounds like it's bunk. I'll bet if I had to buy that much Cleaasil I would have the cops banging on my door.Trailblazer 302G12VS Extreme Miller SD180Coolmate 4Miller 251Miller 175Victor OAHypertherm 380Milling MachineLatheBandsaw
Reply:Its best to do a burn in then paint with high heat paint, the initial burn will get rid of any loose paint or oils on the surface, then give a quick wire wheel and paint...then a second burn to get rid of the paint smell , so it doesnt transfer to the food, even if the outside was only painted..if you smell it , its going on the food..

Reply:Just paint it with stove black and tell him it is for cooking in, not looking at.
Reply:Pores?this rates right up there with the gas station owner telling me he wouldn't have steel tanks in the ground because they absorb water. Still trying to figure that one out!I'd do as suggested, Burn it to boil the residue and old paint out, then paint and season with another fire.
