Many on the forum/internet inquire about vintage Airco or Tec Torch tig torches the received with an old commercial welder. The consensuses is to replace them with a "Linde" style Weldcraft, CK, or other brand 17, 20, 9, 26, etc. A few will suggest manufactures/distributors who still manufacture/carry parts etc. for the "Old Style" torches. Some companies, CK, Weld Tec still make these torches & Weldcraft still does or at least did before Miller completely took them over. The question for those who have used these torches or at least been able to compare them to a "Linde" style is are they better/worse, is there something that made one style more popular than another. Lighter, Faster, Cheaper???For the record this is more for curiosity, I'm not trying to buy into obsolete technology, I just would like to understand why it faded into obscurity. Reply:my 330 amp (+ or gold) that came from a pg&e auction has a linde torch w/ water cooled.     sounds like ya know it takes the regular parts.  mines got a thumb switch hose clamped on.    i got no prob holding/working  it.   my biggest probelm is readapting to alum time/speed, when i'm used to sticking steel.     "faded into obscurity" , thats all about sales/ $.  they do ther best to make things non-universal these days
Reply:I bought into the Airco tig torch system. My tig machine came with some old Union Carbide / Heliarc torches and the Airco H-35 water cooled torch. I personally like the Airco, and took it as a challenge because people told me to "just throw out that obsolete thing." I spent about $100 on a new power cable, gas lenses, collets, etc. Now I am all set for years. The airco h-35 is rigid, good for cup walking, high amp capacity, and i like the nose block design. Tungsten size change requires only changing the collet, as opposed to changing both collet & collet body with the Heliarc torches (such as the 18 series.) I even bought a spare h-35 when it popped up for a good price, and I fully intend on keeping the Airco tig torch fan club going until I am pushing daisies. That being said...I also use an old Union Carbide Heliarc 18 occasionally at home and like it, and I have 20 and 18 series torches at work and like them fine. One "obsolete" goody I seldom use is a Heliarc hw90 air cooled torch. It's a precurser to the hw9 style we see today, but uses some funky old collets and nozzles that are occasionally found on ebay. I like the torch but the cable is so stiff that it's a pain to use.IAMAW Local 330Airco 300 AC/DC HeliwelderAirco Dip-Pak 200 with Profax spool gunPowr-Kraft AC225Everlast PowerArc 200stBuffalo Forge No.21 drill pressSpeedglas 9100xxAirco, Oxweld, Purox, Victor torchesLincoln Ranger 8
