We are a small mom & pop welding supplier. I have been assigned machine repairs along w/everything else. Got an Ideal Arc AC/DC with no spark, no voltage at the output posts, and when switched ON, fan comes on & that's it. Lincoln tech tells me it is probably the transformer gone bad. Can anyone give me a clue how to pin the problem on the transformer.Machine is a 1975 mode.
Reply:if the fan is on. you have an open between the transformer and the terminals.Start at the terminals then follow the leads to the polarity switch. check the switch out real close and make sure it does not show signs of heating. Then follow the leads to the diode assembly. 4 leads. two are ac and 2 are dc. where the ac connects this goes to the transformer. You can measure ac voltage at this point. You should be able to measure low ohms at the weld terminals with the polarity switch in ac. Look at the diagram in the owners manual.Depending on the age of the welder. the diodes are tested a little different. Either type are easy to test for open or shorted diodes.
