Im looking for some helpful advice on putting in a root on large bore pipe with 8010-g.the q.c. guy in our shop told me to drag it in,[it is uphill].he also said the other guys were having trouble with internal undercut. I have not done a whole lot of stick root and Im doing my job test next week so I would appreciate any help, thanks
Reply:While I have never burned 8010, when I run 6010 uphill, I keep the rod angled into the keyhole, allowing the arc force to dig where I have already added material. I don't run straight on perpendicular to the pipe unless fit-up is flawless, how often does that happen??Never thought to check for internal undercut either, not that we really could...Lincoln Power MIG 210 MP ( boat anchor )Lincoln Weld-Pac 100 HDHobart IronMan 230Cutmaster 42Jackson NexGenSumner Ultra ClampsDWM120
Reply:For an uphill test with 1/8 XX10 I like to run a 1/8 gap with a 1/8 land on a 37% bevel not sure about amps maybe 85-100 but, like most pipe welding you have to run whatever amps that get the root in there hotter for a jammed up field fit or a little less amps for some of those monday morning fitups
