I've got a project I want to tackle on my boat, basically make a rocket launcher and grab rail. I want to use 316L stainless. Is it possible to get professional bends with a JD2 manual bender (3/4" OD tubing)?
Reply:it all depends on the bend radius, don't expect nice bends under 3x OD on SS tubeyou can also buy annealed tube that will bend much better about 2x OD, I only used it once but was impressed--------------------------------------------------------------www.becmotors.nlyup, I quit welding.. joined welder anonymous

Reply:I am having a lot of trouble just sourcing the tubing, so may give up the dream. There is a Cal-Mesa metals near me in Yucaipa, CA that will get me the 316 SS, but I would need to buy a bunch. I was looking at 16 ga wall thickness or maybe even going with pipe instead of tube.
Reply:Is there a fabricator in your area that uses the type tubing your looking for where you could get remnants? They might be able to do a couple of quick bends too. I was thinking of a company the did like Bimini tops or radar arches for boats.
Reply:How much do you need?Have you tried IMS (Industrial Metal Supply) in riverside? What about onlinemetals.com?http://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories
Reply:Industrial Metal Supply only stocks 304L. I requested a quote for 316, but they didn't seem interested in a small order. Online metals may be a good route just to try some bends, cost is prohibitive and the lengths they can ship would be too short for my project ultimately. There was a surplus place in Monrovia that used to have a lot of seamless SS tubing, but they are out of business now. I'll check around and see if I can find some remnants, there are some good tower and marine fabricators here in SoCal.Thanks guys.
Reply:I haven't had an issue getting quotes on small batch from IMS but they've had what I was after in stock. Might want to try Competitive Metals in San Diego. Shaprio in St Louis or Stock Car Steel in Mooresville may have it and both can ship full sticks. All those type rotary draw benders work the same, more or less and they work well. JD2, ProTools, JMR, Baileigh, etc. With anything under 5.5 CLR you're right about the minimum wall thickness. For sure 5.5 CLR and above on 3/4" tube would work well. If you needed something tighter you could send it to a shop with a mandrel bender.Enough stuff to build and repair wrinkled up race cars or bring a classic back to life...
