Friday, I got a call at work from one of my best friends, who is a pipefitter. He asked if I will work on a job with him, after I got done with work. I said sure, and asked what I will be doing. He said welding. I guess he has a lot more confidence in me than I do. Well, I got the chance of a lifetime, to do what I have only watched on youtube. It was F'n AWESOME!!! I went straight there after work, didn't get home until 5AM Saturday, man was I beat!!!It is a 60" high pressure water main. Existing pipe is concrete lined, inside and out. We had 5 Lincoln 305G's, 3/16 5P @ 165A, downhill, 4 weldor's. The welding had to take at least 8 hours! It took 1 or 2 days to dewater the line with one 8", two 6", four 4" pumps, and a sucker truck!!!It really sucks not having my own sh!t. I will now start carrying my hood and gear at all times. Being used to an auto dark hood, then having to use a passive, sucks!Last edited by Stick-man; 04-19-2015 at 12:57 PM."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:We were also fighting ground water coming in. Man, we were all covered in mud by the end.One of my downhill welds. ALL welds were checked over by the pro's, and any mistakes were ground out and redone. They said I did fine, and the result of no leaks proved that.Last edited by Stick-man; 04-19-2015 at 12:59 PM."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:When you get so far down in the hole they have to pump fresh air in, it's time to come back up a few steps.  So when you say concrete lined inside and out, what do they do about the concrete lining inside after a repair like that?"The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt

Reply:Just curious, was this PCCP (prestressed concrete cylinder pipe)?  Did it have a spiral wound wire imbedded in concrete?
Reply:haven't you read all the pipe line posts if you show up with a auto dark helmet the run you off the job. Reply:Good for you Stick-man!  It's that nervous feeling when you show up and not quite sure if you the right tools or enough experience to hold your own.  Sure looks like you held your own with no problem! Congrats!

Reply:Originally Posted by Stick-manI think you are referring to what we call around here, RCP (reenforced concrete pipe)??? No, this is steel pipe, with a concrete liner inside and another outside. If you look at the 4th pic from the top, a closeup of me with glasses and cap, you can see the steel pipe with the inner and outer lining. I shoulda got a couple close shots of that.
Reply:I don't know what it was called. But the steel part was probably 1/2" on the end face, which was a bevel. So I'm going to guess the wall thickness was at least 3/4". I'm guessing but I will say the inner concrete was 2" thick and the outer maybe 3"???????? Next time I will get more pics of everything. Man, I was so stoked to just be a part of that!!!"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:Good for you! I've played in enough muddy trenches in my life time. You can have it.
