Reply:Super glue it back on and call it a day!  Actually, I think I'd be suspect of all the bolts from the batch. Something clearly made it past QC. I hope this isn't our future.  I'm with roadkillbobb on this one.

Reply:I read somewhere the new bridge built by some china firm , has problems with the bolts breaking all over the bridge and they are trying to figure out what todo as many bolts are now hidden within the structure..the main problem is china itself doesnt care...they have been caught making parts and putting made in u.s.a. on them and fake serial numbers, so you think you are buying American but you are getting china junk...Of all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...

Reply:A lot of assumption that it is made in China......??? Where the proof? I know know most Chinese stuff is junk, but it seems lately every failure is blamed on China, the real problem is cheap North American companies buying the less then standard quality goods. Simple fix, stop buying Asian made hardware , make them locally, pay more for the product, then we have no one to blame but us!Last edited by BrianC; 04-24-2015 at 04:19 PM.

Reply:It's the Oakland Bay Bridge that has the bad bolts.   It's had quite a history.   When workers complained that the welds were bad, an engineer decided quite quickly all was well, and the welds were encased in concrete.  When they found plates were corroding (that should not have) the solution was to paint and caulk them.    Flooded inspection tunnels.  Snapped tensioning bolts...  The sad part is that we can no longer assume that the new 6.5 billion dollar bridge will be any better than the bridge it replaced.   It's unlikely that it will last any longer than the lifespan of the old bridge.  The old one could have been upgraded in 1/3 the time and 1/5 the cost.   Sigh.Dan----------------------------Measure twice.  Weld once.  Grind to size.MIG:  Lincoln SP100 TIG/STICK:  AHP Alphatig 200X

Reply:It's definitely a cheap bolt, just out of the bin at the local ace hardware. It's a 3/4-10 no grade marks, should be a grade 2, but who knows. Reply:Yes, and looking at Weldermike's beard, he must have been out in the rain because it looks rusty.
Reply:For the OP, I think that this can be a common forging (heading) defect:if you're interested in a possible explanation.  I'm not making excuses for the manufacturer (he should have caught the problem and fixed his process).http://www.globalspec.com/reference/...n-cold-forging
Reply:Very odd, never have seen that myself, seen a lot that either threads did not get formed right and had blank shanks, but up here we are finding out the hydro towers are not using good steel, it is from India I believe and is bending already on new installs, so costing us a lot of money, goes to show what happens when they farm out the steel instead of buying it from good old USA or even Canadian sources.

Reply:Originally Posted by jrporterIf you brought that to me at work we would mount and polish it to look at the grain structure and take some high resolution pictures of the fracture face (maybe even SEM if we thought parts had been installed on production aircraft).  It "looks" like the head was forged, but maybe at the wrong temperature or speed and had some kind of forming defect.  I was an aerospace fasteners engineer for over 36 years and never saw a bolt with a failure that looked like that, but the parts we use are subject to destructive testing and metallurgical examination on sample parts from every manufacturing lot.
