I hopefully starting a job in a few weeks on a mill renovation. It will consist of tearing down the old handrails on existing stair cases (6 floors) and building out an entire new set. I was wondering if I could get some advice on some Engine Driven Welders. There is no power in the building so I need to be self sufficient.

Reply:Kind of a vague question. Are you going to run mig or stick ( I doubt you will tig this)? This would make a big difference on the machine choice. If you are buying, think about what other uses you may have for the machine. The Bobcat is a nice machine, but it lacks the ability to run a remote if you need to tig or run an RC type feeder. 6 floors of stairs would say a VS type feeder to me simply due to the distance unless you can crane it upstairs.I'd also be tempted to look at a small inverter stick machine like a Maxstar150 or 200 and a mid size 230v genset to run it. If you wanted to go wire, a Passport run off a genset on 230v might get you by depending on how thick the material is. My Maxstar 200 would probably do all that hand rail even on 115v power..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:I have an older bobcat 225NT (8000 watts aux) and just bought a trailblazer 275 (10.000+ watts aux power). The trailblazer has enough aux power to run my plasma, tig, mig etc. The bobcat did not (however rhe newer bobcat puts out the same aux power as the trailblazer). I have a S32-P VS suitcase feeder but haven't tried it in mig mode yet on the trailblazer. I just finished some marina repairs with a flux core set up on it, it works good on both machines. From what I am told it works better on the trailblazer because of it's 3 phase weld output, especialy on mig wire feeding. The 14 pin remote looks like it will work on DC tig if I want, but there are three tig choices for scratch start. The only way you can AC tig is to use the aux power to run a stand alone machine. I have not tried a high freq box on the bobcat. I was told by several salesman that sells Lincoln and Miller that Lincoln's auxillary power is dirtier than Millers. |
