I've got a couple of canvas tool bags for mobile work, plastic clamshell tool cases, a portable inverter tig welder, large angle grinders, portable dry cut saw, welding helmets, jumper cables and whole lot of 110v and 220v electric cords cords that I need to lock up. These are things that I can't fit in the drawers of my tool box but are still portable enough that someone could pick up and walk off with.I currently store these big items on rolling wire shelves (baker's shelves) and am quite happy. I now have to store these items in a lockable cabinet. The plastic clam shell cases are the factory cases that came with an 18V cordless dewalt xrp drill, a corded Bosch jigsaw, that sort of thing that I am hoping a lot of you have already figured out practical lockable cabinet solutions for.It would be nice to score a used heavy duty steel cabinet like Jack Olsen set up his garage with, but I may not be able to take my time and watch the auctions with this one.Any recommendations for lockable, shop friendly cabinets that can fit Dewalt plastic clamshell cases side by side like you arrange books on a library shelf?
Reply:Here is what I did. Took a 3 shelf cart and added 16ga sheet to the back and sides. The doors are 1/4 Aluminum hung with 6" pieces of piano hinge. The handle I cabbaged off a old tool box door. While I didn't make mine for security (mostly just to hide the random junk) all it would take is a padlock hasp.If you cant fix it with a hammer, it must be an electrical problem."Boy, everyone starts with a full bag of luck and an empty bag of experience. Reply:Shop wise MSC, Graingers etc sell those sheet metal locking storage cabinets in various sizes and grades depending on what you are looking for. I see them from time to time used at the used machinery places. It's a long drive for you, but Joseph Fazzio's in Glassboro NJ usually has something like this in their used area. Last time I was there they also had some used wall lockers that would probably do the job as well, but it's been a while since I was there last.Mobile work, we always used Knaack tool chests or boxes. They take a ton of abuse and are fairly tough to break into vs the standard storage cabinets. I've got a 2x4" one and a smaller box I picked up some where used..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:I have a couple Knack boxes, roughly 2'x3'x1.5'. They're good for cable, rod, and small tools. Check out F&M Mafco online. They resell rental equipment, including big Knack and Greenlee jobsite boxes for about 50% of the cost of new. I bought my Knack boxes from them. They were in decent shape. They have a couple warehouses around the country, but will also freight to you if need be.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector |
