It welds all by itself.  Ya can just pull it along and watch a sorority car wash at the same timewhile turning out awesome welds.  The best part... by far is when you gaze upon that ridge of slag and think to yourself ITS COLD dangit then tap it with a hammer to pop that slag off revealingthe nicest wetted ( is that a word in polite company )  in bead that looks like a WW admin did itwhile the rest of em were watching over his shoulder.I just though I would let you all know you can give up this 7018 or 6011 sillyness. You will neverturn back as long as the welds hold.millermatic 130XPharbour freight 180 amp mig with added caps.hobart stickmate ac/dcpowerarc 200
Reply:I will keep that in mind next time I place an order. I have never used it.

Reply:7014.  Not suitable for any AWS D1.1 and API code work.  You could author a pre-qualified WPS for the 7014. Good luck.  7018 and 6010 are, and always will be, King.Last edited by ManoKai; 03-28-2015 at 08:29 PM."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:It's better than 6013 but it desighned for dynamic loading. With a decent machine 7018 is king.
Reply:7014 is great to learn on. Jody has a nice video where he uses 7014 and a Lincoln 225AC to build a new kit bumper for his jeep. Its not a bad choice for those kind of situations. I do like excalibur 7018s better though.Last edited by Louie1961; 03-28-2015 at 08:57 PM.Miller Multimatic 255

Reply:Always thought of it as dum dum rod. Works good for building up a flat surface. Pretty much a high deposit 6013.
Reply:7014 is strictly for the noobs. never saw it on high rise or heavy construction jobs. i don't think i ever saw it in the fab shop either. don't hold your breath till it replaces 5p or 7018. what i did see in the fab shop was 7024 which is pretty close to 7014. used with ac jet rod can lay down some heavy molten metal especially in the larger diameters.Last edited by docwelder; 03-28-2015 at 10:50 PM.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:I keep 3/32" and 1/8" in the barn to be used with my AC buzzbox. Outside of that 7018 for me.
Reply:I hate the stuff personally. It's just 6013 with dark flux to me....You couldn't give it to me.Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Trump/Carson 2016-2024

Reply:The local hardware stores that do stock welding supplies have always carried lots of 6013 and 7014 for farm use. For the last 30 years that's pretty much all I've used with the AC buzzboxes, but that apparently has had more to do with bad advice than choice. What types of jobs are 6013 and 7014 best suited for? I've fixed lots of ag equipment with them and I've had a pretty good success rate but I'm open to suggestions of improvement, especially for cracked frames and high load areas.250 amp Miller DialArc AC/DC StickF-225 amp Forney AC Stick230 amp Sears AC StickLincoln 180C MIGVictor Medalist 350 O/ACut 50 PlasmaLes
Reply:To me the best thing about 7014 is that I can easily find it in 1/16" locally. Easy to run and works fine for exhaust work when I'm out of argon.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:But if it was something with a lot of load on it you'd use 7018?250 amp Miller DialArc AC/DC StickF-225 amp Forney AC Stick230 amp Sears AC StickLincoln 180C MIGVictor Medalist 350 O/ACut 50 PlasmaLes
Reply:For us home boy novice welders I think the 7014 is sweet, I just picked up a box of Fire Power 1/8 7014 and 7018. This was my first try at 7014 and it is way easier for a rookie to run downhill with and not trap slag. The finished weld appearance looks really close to the 7018 to me, you can tell it's not digging quite as deep to the 7018 but pretty close, but the slag pealed itself so nice. Reply:No thanks. 7018 runs better out of position. Never seen 7014 on any industrial job, ever. I'll use 7014 for teaching the kids to weld. It's great for teaching strike and re strike arcs. That's all I'll use it for.Last edited by snoeproe; 03-29-2015 at 03:01 AM.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:7014 is a low penetration, high deposition rod. It is completely unsuitable for most things you use 6010 or 7018 for. It's a total noob rod. It works well for thin stuff you probably shouldn't be stick welding in the first place. The ambiguous title of "greatest welding electrode in the universe" will always go to 7018.Last edited by MikeGyver; 03-29-2015 at 04:36 AM.Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com

Reply:According to this AWS electrode selection chart - some people are giving 7014 a bad rap for no good reason. In my opinion. And yes, 7018 is the best choice, for most things, and this chart agrees with that analysis (that many people share).7014 is not rated as low penetration, 7024 is - and people use 7024 a lot.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.

So what are the best applications for 7014 and 6013 if we are in fact going to match the rod to the job? The only rating on the above chart where the 7018 is a way ahead is ductility. I find it odd that they didn't include tensile strength.Last edited by whtbaron; 03-29-2015 at 11:52 AM.250 amp Miller DialArc AC/DC StickF-225 amp Forney AC Stick230 amp Sears AC StickLincoln 180C MIGVictor Medalist 350 O/ACut 50 PlasmaLes

Reply:I like 7014 so much, I use it for a tooth pick...I don't build bridges, so I use the chit out of it...I'll slap the first white collared geek that shows up waving a procedure in my face saying I gotta use whatever he sez to do what I already know how to do with what saves me beer time and bucks. I can back twist my stinger lead and lay a 7014 rod on the work while I fetch a beer or pee and scratch and fart and it will burn lots pettier than if I held 6013 or 7018 in my claws.....But that's just me, and I refuse to argue with idiots that  ain't never tried it.

Reply:7014 is ok for most general work and 7024 is great for flooding an area.If you are used to 7018 it works good for almost everything.I used to have to weld farm equipment with mystery rod.The guy I worked for would buy rod at auctions to keep a can full behind the pickup seat, all of the markings ended up worn off.The best that I hoped for was half a dozen rods that looked the same, and didn't have too much rust or flux missing. Some handfuls wouldn't do anything right and others would be things of beauty.
Reply:That chart lists 6013 as an 8 for heavy plate. You read the manufactures recommendations and they it's good for sheet metal??? Tensile strength is only a small portion of what makes a specific rod strong. For example 6010 in application is stronger than 7014. Another example would be 11018 being weaker than 7018 because it has less ductility. There are reasons why there are so many different rods to choose from. No one rod is best for everything.
Reply:I wonder how much ductility and low temperature impact advantage 7018 has if it is not properly stored in an oven or fresh out of a can. Something makes me think it would be not much different than 7014 at that point, but I can't prove that.Miller Multimatic 255

Reply:Most of the steel specs in the work I do call out a 70xx rod to be used, according to the specs 7014 is a perfectly suitable rod for welding joist and deck around here.I personally like love the stuff, easy to burn and the slag comes off nice and I can buy it anywhere.

Reply:It is E-6013 with iron powder thats all,if E 70 needed meets spec if low hy no. Go to tack and sheet metal and for general repair. Hy strength E-7018. Works fine fence, trailers fix it work .
