Ok as the title suggests, I'm chasing info on a build I saw on here some time ago where the guy built a barbecue out of an old high pressure gas cylinder.I've spent over an hour looking and can't for the life of me find it.  I have a couple of old cylinders that won't be taken back by the supplier and I would like to make a barbecue in the similar style to what you American's use. As an aussie I don't mind the odd barbecue but generally all we use is gas burners and I'd really like to try cooking with something a bit different and also try out some of the american barbecue recipes I see floating around now. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,Ben

Reply:That's the 1st grill I've seen done that I can think of on here using a HP gas cylinder. Most are typically propane cylinders since you get a larger grilling area.Keep in mind here in the US we have a number of different designs that are often misreferred to as "grills". A grill uses direct heat like shown above. There are also a lot of guys who have "smokers". These usually use indirect heat and smoke to cook and flavor the food. Some units allow both smoking or grilling. Smokers are often easy to spot as many times they have a separate fire box down and to the side of the main cooking surface. If you cut the bottom off a HP gas cylinder, you get a great bell or gong using the top half..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:psacustomcreations, Thats a nice grill but thats not quite the one I saw last time.DSW, I'm about 98% sure I saw it on here. The guy used an old argon or similar cylinder and cut it about 1/3 of the way down on a 45* angle then rotated 180* so it made an 'L' shape. He then used the top where the valve was to make a chimney. As for the correct term, I'm pretty sure I got it correct. I don't recall seeing a fire box so it must have been a grill. From memory he was going to keep it on his truck. Thanks for the input though.
Reply:I must have missed that one. because that doesn't sound familiar to me at all. I've seen a lot of "pipeliner" grills, where they section pipe to make a grill, but not cylinders. The issue with using cylinders is you don't have much working surface, as illustrated in the pictures above. Two good steaks, or 4 Burger patties, or a package of hot dogs, and you're out of space. Not much room to work, not much ability to adjust for heat, hot spots, grease fires, etc. Not to mention the limited amount of fuel that could be used in a grill that size.Last edited by ThorsHammer; 05-01-2015 at 12:22 PM.There are no problems. Reply:I know this isn't what you are describing but some of the build technique is the same.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...ipeliner+grillGravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:Step 1 : be sure cylinder is empty and no pressure before cutting into

Reply:In my search for details, I've come across a lot of other information so I think I'll ditch the cylinder for the wood fired grill. I'll use it to make a gas powered grill to replace the hot plate I've been using with a soft flame burner under it to cook lunch and I'll make a proper smoker sort of thing.
