Apartment complex stairway. Bottom steps and casings just about rotted completely out. Owner wants them repaired. Need about the bottom 3 or 4 steps and framework replaced. The steps are 48" wide and the channel on the sides is 10" wide. I think you could brace up the staircase, cut out the bottom section and weld in new material if you could find something to match. Replace the step pans and pour new concrete. I was asked to take a look and see if I wanted to do it but I'm not sure I want to take it on. What do you think a job like this is worth? Reply:I think it would be easier to replace the entire stair with hand rail that has been engineered with a stamp. I have been asked to do the same type job years ago. I try to live on the side of caution as I get older. Good luck. John
Reply:I would think if the bottom steps are that bad there are problems elsewhere .Where is the line between good and bad .
Reply:The channel appears to be standard mc channel and should be easy to find. Makes great trailer fenders too.Yeah, I know, but it'll be ok!Lincoln Square wave 255Miller Vintage mig30a spoolgunThermal Dynamics Pacmaster 100xl plasmaSmith mc torchEllis 1600 band saw
Reply:Is this in a SNOW state ?? That could be from rock salt or snowmelt products. This to me could mean it all is bad or will be going quick. Why would just the bottom few stairs go bad ? Is the rest REALLY solid ???

Reply:Figure out how much you'd charge to redo the whole staircase and subtract $20.
Reply:Not in a salt state, this is in North Alabama. The apartments are two stories of four units with a breezeway between. This is where the stairs are so the higher you go the more they are under the roof line. This was the worst of two staircases that are in need of repairGraysOrnamentalIron.com |
