Quick question-Ill be applying to Steamfitters local 602 in D.C. next year.  Is anyone here a member, or have experience applying with them or other Steamfitter Unions? What I'd really like to know is how much need they have for welders. Thanks guys.

Reply:Why not apply NOW !!!! It may take a waiting year just to be eligible .You may be required to take an entrance exam and drug test upon application.  Find out all the info NOW if you haven't already.

Reply:Call the hall and speak to one of the business agents (or training coordinator).  Explain what you are trying to do, and see if they would help you.Every local is different, so I think that would be your best approach.  Try to understand these guys are very busy.  Be persistent, but not annoying.Worked for me anyways.....
Reply:Thanks, I'll give them a call.
Reply:i work alongside the steamfitters often. they stand around and wait for me to weld what they fit up. a few of them made over $200,000 last year so i would say it's a decent gig.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla

Reply:I know local 602 ,they do a lot of a/c and chiller work in DC, plus all new union construction . So if you have some skill  beside welding you can probably find a year round gig. If you only want to weld you will be jumping from job to job, unless you can get on with one of the boiler  or mechanical companies.
Reply:Thanks for the reply, this type of info is very helpful.

Reply:Talk about an in depth response! I appreciate you taking the time to pass all of this information on.  I have emailed back and forth with them and heard the same thing about taking general classes to begin, then choosing an area of specialty.  My welding experience is limited to a Comm. College welding program and practice at home, all with the goal of a 6G cert.I do have a few classes like math and drafting that should help me out.  I was curious as to how the contractor you work for as an apprentice was chosen by availability or by the specific area you want to pursue.  The HVAC, refrigeration and pipefitting is all new to me.  Makes a lot of sense to have skills across the board.Again, thanks for all the information.  I definitely plan on attending the open house.Andrew
