I just got a new stator housing from Weldmart.  The two cables that come out of the housing - one long and one short.  What brush holder do each attach to ?  I should've labeled them but was in a rush and forgot.  Thank you for the help.
Reply:It might help to tell us what model welder?  code number?
Reply:My appologies for not being more specific.  This machine was built in 1972.  It's a crossover machine.  Welding terminals on the panel.  Low mount starter. Octagon generator.  I just bought a rebuilt octagon generator from Weldmart.  It had two cables comming out of the stator housing.  They looked like they were spliced together, one short and one long cable. I hooked the short cable to the 8 oclock brush holder and the long cable to the 2 oclock holder.  I ran the jumper cable from the 11 oclock holder down to the 4 oclock holder.  I tried to weld with this machine today, and no weld output.  I have auxillery power at the outlet but not welding power.  I did not install a rebuilt armature.  A possible short ?  Thank you for any help.
Reply:Call weldmart and ask them for a connection instructions.Find your code number and call lincoln and ask for a diagram for your welder. With a good diagram and proper connection instructions you should be able to get it working. If you can't find the code number. look at the old generator can for a 4 digit number stamped on it. These older welders have a exciter generator or alternator. Aux power comes from these. The generator will give DC power the alternator will give AC power. This power is fed through the polarity switch (if it has one) and current control to the small wires going into the weld generator can. This makes the magnetic field that starts the weld current. I think the two large wires are the series coils. The rotor makes to weld current sends it out through the brushes. One set to the terminals the other to the series coils and then to the out put. But with out the code number I am guessing. You can either call lincoln by phone or go to their web site and ask an expert.  Code and serial number are a must there. Get a diagram and trace it out. You most likely have a wire in the wrong place.
Reply:Contacted weldmart.  Told them there are only two cables coming out of the housing to hook up to the brushholders.  I was told there should be 4.  Sent them pictures of the stator internals.  waiting for reply.
