I am looking at a wirematic 255,its a 99 model. It seems to weld fine and wire speed and voltage adjust work fine.my question to any owners out there is   "The machine hums like a stick welder, is this normal for the 255 ?"ZebLast edited by Zebadiah; 10-01-2011 at 11:21 AM.Millermatic 200Miller Dialarc 250 ac/dcAll people have the right to stupidity but some abuse the privilege
Reply:If the welder works right, and the noise level is louder when welding and quieter when just feeding wire. we can fix this. First step find the wood wedges between the iron core and the transformer coils. Try tapping them in a little. See if this makes a difference. If not, we will have to go to the next step. If there is a electrical motor repair shop near you they may be able to help you for a small charge. What I have done is heat up the transformer and pour very hot and thin motor epoxy over the wedges and at the corners of the transformer coil. Do not fill the large gaps. just where the coil almost touches the iron. This can be done with the transformer inside the welder. The reason for the noise is the coil has come loose from the iron and needs to be glued back to it. If you can find some 3M scotchcast splicing resin at a electrical supply house. You might try that. Comes in a pouch with two pockets. open the divider and mix in the bag.wait until almost to hot to handle . cut corner and pour out. Should harden in 1 hour. What ever you use you want it to be very hot and thin so it will soak in the cracks and then harden. To thick and it will no soak in the small cracks.

Reply:Hey Zeb,I used a Lincoln Wirematic 255 for 11yrs at the company I retired from last year. It ran superbly & never had an issue. Yes, it did make a "humming" sound when running & there were a couple times I made the fan go on as it usually did not run when used lightly or idle. I used 33lb/mo, which may not be a lot to some companes, but it was rugged, smooth arc, & in 11yrs, only changed tips (3) times. When the company closed, I sold it with all of the other equipment in the metal dept. since the boss knew I would get a decent price & how well I kept all the rest of the equipment. Had it listed on C/L for $1000 & sold it in (2) hrs. as it was really clean. If you can get one at a decent price, don't hesitate.....they WORK!!!Denny Attached ImagesComplete Welding/Machine/Fab.
