I love these type of repair..Worn aluminum journal.No welding involved...Very easy to do.Thanks to some D.O.M. tubing with a 1.250 EXACT thru hole all I need to do is turn the journal on the roller 1.255...Cut tubing then face off the side that goes towards the roller..Heat tubing with rosebud..Insert..Let cool...Machine to 1.6875 +.000 -.002Done in 30 mins start to out of the machine.What could be easier?I get all the fun jobs......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Nice - but curious.What kind of load is on these rollers?The overall journal diameter is back to spec but can the now reduced effective diameter of the "stub" the DOM tubing was installed on take the load without fracturing at the base?But then I would imagine there would be a similar concern regarding the HAZ if it were welded up to turn back to spec too. Reply:These just transfer fiberglass matting that go in the middle of asphalt shingles...No weight involved.Unfortunately they just take them out when worn and give them to us still covered in glass fibers..Gets itchey fast....And FWIW I put the roller in the machine by myself... Reply:That is a nice looking cutting tool, is it hand ground? HSS? With this aluminum do you use any cutting fluid? Is the DOM tubing 6061? Any concern about the heat input affecting the characteristics of the aluminum for this job? Thanks in advance for the answers.

Reply:I put the rosebud over the top/side of the piece and making sure it heats evenly and just count to 20....Plenty hot enough.If you are not sure when hot enough is hot enough take a accetelene torch with no oxygen and blacken the piece.Turn up the oxygen and get a good blue flame and start heatingWhen the black goes away you are ready.I just use the propane torch from the start.Probably have done over 1O0 of these over the years......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
