info on welder

can anyone tell me give me a guess on the age of this welder?or any other important info. its a sa250 with perkins. can this machine tig? its for sale in my area for $1500.thanks for the help! Attached Images

Reply:Your gonna need a reg, Argon bottle and a tig torch with a gas valve on the handle or some other way to control the gas, but it is a strong stick welder, and  probably has a generator in case your power goes out in a storm or disaster.  I'm not sure, but you might be able to get some "suitcase" type accessories to enhance the DC tig and other capabilities like wire feeders  similar to what Miller offers too  Just a thought.I'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys?  Trade?
Reply:ive got a full tig setup. bottle, reg and all. i was just making sure that the machine could tig with anyother things like a suitcase. the generator puts out  3kw.

Call the guy back and ask him for the numbers, post them here. Reply:well bad news already. . . . ive got the wrong gas. i was supposed to get argon. i got home from work and they delivered argon 75%/ co2 25% gas. it was too late to go exchange. . . . . will this work for just a test weld on this machine? and is there a website to check the serial number and code if this machine?

Reply:well i finally got the hood and doors off. been workin on cleanin it out. so far ive replaced both fuel lines because of cracks and leaks. and im tryin to find the upper coolant hose becauses its cracks and leaks too, the local tractor thinks they can get one.  im thinking about repaintin the frame and sheet metal back to factory gray, does anyone have a factory number or close match for the paint? how close would the rustoleum hammer tone black? the sa200 painted with that looks awesome! but i dont wanna paint the motor/generator just yet, so i want a kinda close match.how have yall painted them? roller brush or with air gun ive got a sandblaster  and shop to do all the work myself.  the only major problem i see is the filler neck on the fuel tank has a hole wore in from the hood. ive added some more pics.thanks for lookin! Reply:That machine was made mid 1980 pre 1981. Its a AC machine, those machines have the wedge exciter you find a lot of those machines for sale. The DC version of the SA250 much better machine much harder to find, you won't find a gang of them in the bone yard for parts. Perkins diesel you cant go wrong. I would look for a old sa200 red-face interchange the barrels you'll have a awesome pipe welding rig if that the kind of work you do. Aside from the barrel and ac exciter nice rig.
Reply:well its finally the weekend! got the exhaust paint flat black and am gettin the paint for the rest tomarrow. the fuel tank is drainned and the hole is gonna be brazed shut tomarrow.what would changing the barrel do?the tractor shop couldnt find a hose number. .does anyone know of the radiator hoses numbers?i found a new faceplate from this place. they have sa200 and 250 parts.http://stumpfweldingsupplies.com/SA250Nameplates.htmlthanks!!

Reply:Well if you ever welded with a old shorthood welder from lincoln, you will definately know the difference. Octagon barrel to a round barrel. Reply:Awesome Welder90. I cant wait to see it gray. I love messing with these old things. I wish I could come across a diesel machine for 1500. I have 4 gas sa-200's. I would sell one to buy the diesel but the market sucks! Keep the updates and pictures coming. Looks like a great project.
Reply:You got a good deal on that machine, looks great! Most SA250's I find here in TX are in the $2500-$4000 area. I've been looking for a Shorthood but if I find a deal on an older diesel 250 I'll go that route. As far as the generator goes, the old round barrel all copper wound machines are said to have a better arc than the newer ones do. Reply:thought id add a few more pics. new upper hose on and exhaust painted. im getting a new faceplate and stickers from stumpfwelding. i cant find all the safety stickers so im going to see a local printing shop can remake some. i thought i read somewhere that this was copper wound. Reply:ran into my first problem tonight. i ran it for just over an hour oil pressure started out at 65psi and when i heard it start make some racket i looked at and seen 18 psi!! its not leaking any and is just under the max line on the dipstick. not realy sure why it drops but i gotta figure it out fast!!! usin the old ac225 to finish up kinda sucked!!
Reply:Could be normal oil pressure for a older worn engine or other problems yet or just defective gauge or plugged line or bad sender if electric gauge & light been added.  Maybe just needs cleaning and flushed out but you saying it made noise it could be a spun rod or main bearing too.  Check using another gauge or go ahead and pull the pan making sure oil pump screen isn't plugged then start looking for a spun bearing.
Reply:i hope it aint that bad!!! it sounds like more of a knock. if you let it cool off it goes away but when the oil pressure drops it starts again. im gettin a hour meter and the oil and filters is gettin changed. im ordering all my stuff from stumpf so im ordered all at once. is the gas seal on sa200 and sa250 the same size?
Reply:i finally got some more parts ordered. the faceplate, gas tank seal, hour meter, and 12" lincoln arc decals are coming from stumpf. and the receptacle decal( s-16386) is coming from the local welding store, i ordered 2..... for those that have a sa 250 which stickers does urs have? any pictures or parts numbers would be great.. mine only had 3 stickers total, the rest was covered in paint. i took the face plate off and found some nice paint!!!! the right color too..thanks for lookin! Reply:That is a DC only welder. It will also supply auxiliarly 110/120v AC power to run power tools.Do not use 75/25 gas for DC scratch start tig welding. You will melt your cup o the tig torch. Reply:can anyone tell me what the sender on the end of the "t" is? it has one wire to the amp gauge and the other to coolant gauge. the oil gauge is mechanical. the oil lines hooks into the t but i cant fingure out what this sender does?!?  thanks for any help!
