Looking for some direction here... I see some larger businesses and shops state they have a certain certification... are there certain ones just for larger businesses? should I just stick to getting a few that would cover the work in my area.My reason for asking is, When advertising I don't want to steer potential clients away because I am not a XXX certified shop etc.Or, is what I am seeing just a blanket of certifications that their employees have. I really don't know much about Certs. I had them for the company I used to work for. But that was just taking the test when they told you it was time- Christian M.C3 Welding & Fabrication - CNC Plasma Cutting-Mobile Welding-Custom welding and fabwww.c3welding.com

Reply:It really depends on what services you want to provide as a business. If you're a mobile welder who wants to be called out to do structural erection for light commercial construction, an AWS D1.1 Unlimited cert in both SMAW and FCAW will cover you.If you're in an area with lots of marine business and you want to perform work on boats, then get a basic ABS cert (it's very similar to the AWS D1.1) and get set up to weld aluminum as well. The thing with aluminum is, more than likely you'll end up having to develop a procedure on your own and get it qualified for the specific job you're performing. If you're a big outfit and want to get contracted for bridge construction, then you'd better maintain a current AWS D5.1 certification. If you want the oil companies to hire your crew as a maintenance contractor in oil processing facilities, then there are several certs that cover primarily SMAW and GTAW on mild and stainless steel pipe that you will need your employees to maintain. If you want to cater to local farmers and homeowners to make little repairs, then you don't *need* any specific certifications. It really is dependent on what you want to do as a business owner.

Reply:Thanks Hillbilly, thats kind of what I was thinking was the case. I guess I will do some research.123weld. I have always held the same feeling. People would find out I weld, and then ask if I'm certified. When i reply "in what?" they always had a dumb look on their face. I have been thinking of going down and just doing a basic plate test, just to answer the ones who want something done by someone who is "certified" And hope that those who know what they are talking about give me the chance to get proper cert for the job. The website is still a work in progress, but I did finally get all the stock text off of it!Thanks guys- Christian M.C3 Welding & Fabrication - CNC Plasma Cutting-Mobile Welding-Custom welding and fabwww.c3welding.com
