So I spent today practicing stainless stick, I'm using Lincoln 308L 1/8 rod, about 90 amps, 2G 3G and 4G. The plates are carbon 5/8 thick double 35° bevels with a closed gap. I've been using a weave technique for all of the positions but I can't seem to stop the weld from peaking and being high in center. I pause extra on the toes and it still does it, so far going fast is producing the best weave but I wanted to hear some tips, these will also be xray tested, I've never done Xray just bends so I need some advice there as well. Thanks guys!!

Reply:I watched that and tried the technique but it still didn't flatten it out completely.
Reply:use 3/32. Stainless stick is like trying to smear water on a wall.
Reply:I always drag those rods and I use them quite a bit. You also may be slightly low on your amperage.
Reply:I found some 3/32s and the code allows them!!!

Reply:third vote for low amperage and practice..........when I am messing with a new rod I like to try running it at both extremes of its amp rating, get a feel for what it looks like too hot and too cold. Reply:Well I got the hang of it and put in a good coupon, I used about 115 amps and used drag stringers. My only worry is how tough the Xray is, I feel my.  Piece would bend but I've never had an Xray done.
Reply:You should try running multi passes, SS runs nice if you don't try to run heavy beads, least amount of metal you can, with Multi Passes, Be Careful SS has Hexavalent Chrome , Can cause cancer so use Fume extractor , Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:My advice for you would be that you whip it very fast and then hold the toes. Especially if you use 1/8 electrode. With amperage I cannot give you any advice becouse I have a remote in my hand and I start my stainless welds with 10 amps and end them with 10 amps to prevent pinhole at the end of a weld.
Reply:308L is for stainless applications and will not fly on a test or any application where you are mixing alloys.  If you are welding stainless to carbon you want 309/309L.  You will have a much better experience welding with it and way more success with the integrity of the final product.  I've seen a lot of attempts fail when someone welds stainless to carbon using 308.  As far as your setup, 1/8" @ 90 amps is really cold as some others have mentioned.  115-125 is a suitable range for this diameter rod.  Also as mentioned, at least for a test, run 3/32.  Generally you have plenty of time to fill out your coupon and this lets you sew it up nice and easy.
