I have a bunch of Hougen style bits that I would like to use on my drill press, Can someone tell me what size arbor I have so I can figure out the Annular Cutter Arbor I need?

Reply:Looks like a Morse taper #4  to me.http://www.davehylands.com/Machinist...aper-Chart.pngLincolin Power Wave 450, Lincoln Powermig 255, Lincoln Pro Mig 140, Lincoln Squarewave Tig 275, Miller Big 40 G(with Hobart Hefty suitcase), Thermal Arc 95S and Esab PCM875 in an already full machine shop.

Reply:I looked at the part diagram from my drill press, Its a MT3. This is what I think I need?https://www.amazon.com/Annular-Cutte...ustrial&sr=1-3Last edited by Millwrightdude; 3 Weeks Ago at 04:34 PM.

Reply:Just make sure you have a large enough motor to turn 'em.  I can't use annulars on my small press, not enough balz.  My mill is the only thing that will run them well (1.5hp motor)
Reply:Here's the dimensions of the tapers https://www.morsecuttingtools.com/ho...Dimensions.pdf  and  https://www.engineersedge.com/manufa...able_13465.htm
Reply:My drill press is 1.5hp
Reply:So will my drill press do it?

Reply:Hougen recommends 550 for bits up to 1 1/4" I believe.I run steel (up to 1 1/4) on 660 and stainless and large steel at 325 on my Bridgeport Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk

Reply:Here's a comprehensive speed/feed chart for annulars  https://www.icscuttingtools.com/pdfs...ar-Cutters.pdfTo me anyways, these are aspirational speeds on my machine.  If I exceed 230rpm, the cutter will cut allright, but you have to be careful not to overload it while continuing to take material.  Anything 1", and above, has a tendency to cause my belts to slip when the cutter starts to stall.  And it's a Catch-22..............the cutter starts to stall because the belts start to slip  I don't have the best machine, so it might not be representative of how your drill will handle the cutters.
Reply:Originally Posted by farmersammmI think it will.  Keep to the lowest RPM, and keep the belts tight.  My greatest problem has always been belts slipping.  Even the mill will slip if I forget to really put some strain on the belts.
Reply:I use annular cutters up to 2 3/4"x 4" in a radial drill with coolant inducers and have always found it best to start below recommended speeds and feeds to get a feel for speeds and feeds that don't set up chatter.
Reply:I use the cutters quite often in my dewalt 1622 magnetic drill. 2 speed gearbox, 300 and 450 rpm. Up to 7/8" or so I use high and then low for larger ones. Ive ran 1-3/4" cutters with it and had no chatter issues at that speed. I generally use cutting oil instead of coolant as most holes I punch are horizontal.
Reply:Ive been thinking I might find a mag drill

Reply:You won't be able to use pilot nor will the slug eject if you use a end mill holder.

Reply:Originally Posted by Lis2323I stand corrected. I think I got the RPMs below 100. I used a handheld photo laser tach for the reading. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Reply:The vertical milling adapter is VERY cool.  I remember when you picked it up a while back.
Reply:Originally Posted by farmersammmVery few, if any, of these smaller drill presses are geared right.  A good metal drill should run down in the 70rpm range, same with a mill.  My small mill only goes down to 230rpm, which is ridiculous.  It really puts a crimp in using larger diameter cutters.
Reply:You're 50hz in Canada aren't you?  I always forget that not all countries run at 60hz.
Reply:60hz in Canada also so that would be 90 RPM. (Oops) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk:

Reply:Are you considering downsizing?  Or do ya have another place in mind that's about the same size.  It's a nice place you're living on, except for the wooded area around the house.  I'd not want too much fuel near a house up in that neck of the woods, even with your buffer zone.
Reply:Sammy,we probably have the best setup of hotshots, and layout in the state for fires.. You will see very little fires in out this area.. They jump on it quick, and BLM handles the fuel load pretty well with prescribed burns.I will downsize for a bit, and whatever I find after that is up in the air.. I was able to part trade off my F-150 and mini camper for  2021 trailer.. Another long story there, but It gives me the option to sell that thing, and use the money to fix things up for the sale.. No interest loan is what it will be.. The RV has went up over 5 grand since I picked it up in April. At this stage in my life, a home based shop is all I want.. If I have to build one, then so be it..Remember I sold my last place in Jan.2008,(not counting the fixers I helped a few others get into) and then it melted down good.. have a  feeling might be time to jump on this thing, and get it sold..If I do keep the trailer, then I have to use a line of credit to finish this place up..Either way works..Also, if I keep the Trailer, a 2 wheel drive 460/440/454 gasser will pull it to it's next spot.. The gas prices will drive down the cost on those truck.. Old school stick, and big block will work perfect for limited use..I have a few other options on what direction I might go... Reply:What  would be the advantage of  annular  cutters  over drill bits  in a good  drill press? Can  annular  cutters be  re  sharpened.       Canada's  Hydro  is  50hz    At  least  here in  Manitoba.I  noticed  my  equipment  ran  slower  here  than in the  UK.                     Thanks.Last edited by Josey; 2 Weeks Ago at 09:04 PM.
Reply:Annular cutters cut a true hole, and with fewer hang ups than a typical hole saw.  I use up to a 3/4 inch with a enco drill press, low speed and low pressure.   For me it is slow but drills true.
