Simple project right?  Hack up a piece of RR track into the shape of an anvil.  Well,  I got into it and the damn thing turned into an all day project.  Here's a pic of the humble start.  I'll post finish pics tomorrow when the paint is dry enough to flip over.  If you got a RR track anvil, feel free to post a pic or two.

Reply:It's kinda cute. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Reply:I made this one for a young friend that helps me all the time. And yes it turned into a project.

Reply:I've never formed the nose of mine into the typical anvil shape. I don't do any special forming with it. Drilled it and bolted it using conveyor belt washers.

Reply:Here's a pretty neat anvil forged from a rail.  The little hammer is forged from 52100 steel.

Reply:After you guys made your anvils, did any of you do any heat treating to the anvil?
Reply:Here's one I built for a friend. It was a lot of work. I left half of it rounded and built it up for half of it square edged. You want to use a rod with moly in it as it will hold up to the hammer blows better. I use 110-18 when I reservice old anvils that are bellied in or have bad edges. It's a common rod for impact resistance welds. You might want to reverence this http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=34618I can't get the picture to load. I've posted it before, you may be able to find it. Sorry.
Reply:Thanks anickode I was going to ask where do you find a 2 foot section of track.Dave ReberWadsworth Ohio
Reply:I think I went too far this time.  It's so pretty I don't want to use it.  It spent more than just a few hours in the mill getting the working surface flat and square.  Then flipped over and fly cut the base.  If you compare the pics you'll notice I did add some material back onto the base.  It just didn't look right.  The horn was carefully laid out and ground by hand to be symmetrical.  Every working surface was sanded down with 300 grit.   I stopped short of breaking out the buffer and going for a mirror finish.  If it ends up on a book shelf, I might do that yet.Dimensions....12" from tip to tail, 4 3/4" tall, flat surface is 7" by 2 1/2".

Reply:Wow boostin!!! Awesome work!! How bad was the track to mill? I'm surprised it hasn't hardened to all get out.
Reply:The sides of the rail actually machined pretty easy with a chinese HSS end mill.  Produced dust kind of like cast iron.  The weld I put on top needed to be fly cut with carbide. No more than .010" per pass.  The underside of the base was hard as hell.  I didn't cut it so much as polish it with my quickly dulled carbide.  It was already flat and parallel to the top so I let it go.Last edited by Boostinjdm; 09-09-2012 at 03:15 PM.My name's not Jim....

Reply:Very nice job there. I'm impressed. I wondered how well they would machine when I saw the one Oldendum posted up. I could use a little anvil like that, especially the horn. My 50 lb Fisher isn't too abd, but the horn leaves a lot to be desired.  I was eying up some old rails laying 1/2 buried in the ballast at the side of the road bed the other day,  while looking for some spikes to forge. I think someone would say something and probably call the cops if I showed up with the 14" demo saw and the abrasive blade and tried to cut up a few chunks however. I was thinking the rail would make great dies for a power hammer... This is one of those times I wished I had a small portable OA rig. Come to think of it I've got 2 40's of acet, and a 40 of O2. Probably just need the reg adapter to make the acet reg fit the 40 and some way to haul the cylinders and I could probably torch cut what I need. Still everything is right out in the open next to the houses near the station, so somebody would probably still call the cops. I need to keep looking... Sad thing is about two months ago they ripped up some rails leading to the old freight station in town when they were turning it into a bar and needed the space for a deck and handicapped ramp. If I'd thought of it then, I could have probably gotten all I wanted if I'd given them scrap value for one of the rails....No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:When I say that little anvil was forged, I mean forged.  Then stress-relieved twice and annealed.  And it was heat-treated.  Old fellers do that stuff.

Reply:Here's a dolly and a small anvil I made... The track I used is supposedly part of the original track installed in Atlanta during the civil war...Polished with an old style "locked" DA sander with 400...(locked means it spins more like a grinder)

Reply:Absolutely gorgeous.  You have boosted plain track into something that would be allowed in the house. How about making a small all metal hammer to go with it a crack nuts on it as it sits on a coffee table.A girl could drape her necklaces over the horn and set her rings on the top.Or use as an anvil and be happy it is so nice.Miller Syncrowave 180SDLincoln WeldPak 100 with gasHandheld Milwaukee BandsawO/A Cutting Torch

After seeing some of the others on here I will have to clean this one up and mill the top flat

Reply:No need to go cutting up on rail sticking out of the ballast... AND don't get caught trying! The charges these days are terroristic in nature, Homeland Security and all. Even if we all know the line has been abandonded for years, some goody twoshoes will be on their cell while driving to turn you in. The easiest way to get a chunk of rail is to catch one of the section crews working and tell them what you're looking for. They've probably got exactly what you want on the truck, and if not can tell you where to find it. At least that way you asked if someone does say something. Speaking as a humble Railroader...Oh and BTW, Nice project! I have a couple of chunks that just found a new use..."The beauty of the Second Amendment is that it will not be needed until they try to take it." - Thomas Jefferson If the Lights are a Flashin', STAY OFF the tracks!!! It might be me at the Throttle...
Reply:This is mine. It's not fancy but it puts about 100lbs directly under my hammer. Also being bolted to the 4x6 and set a foot and a half in the ground it doesn't ring. No ringing keeps the neighbors a little happier.

Reply:Awesome DUDE !!!!!!!!!!!!!  That's for going with you to church on SUNDAY. Man, I can't getmy shoes that shinny . You be "THE MAN". I would just keep that one in the kitchen. Amazing !

Reply:Near my folks place there are long sections of old track laying next to the new. I might take a walk for a 1' section. I hope I don't get the cops on my buttDave ReberWadsworth Ohio
