Hey guys. Im new to the forum here and am looking for some help. My knowledge of circuits and electrical is very limited but iv very handy and i grasp new things very quickly.I own a Lincoln weldanpower 225 ac/dc machine with cc/cv. Has the Onan B43E engine.  It DOES NOT have a remote receptacle plug. However i plan on using the machine for tig work and a control would be nice, as well as simply not needing to walk all the way to the machine to change the amperage when stick welding. I know that this will take a good bit of wiring and possibly even some circuitry. I know that these types of controls can either be direct controls or be controlled by a board of some sort. I dont know much more than that and need some help figuring out just what it would take to do this.  To be clear i would like to be able to use a remote amperage control such as the knobs stick welders use, and a finger amperage knob/arcstart you would see on a tig torch.
Reply:Since this is in the planning stage,,,, an easy way to do it would be simply power a new inverter machine.  Second benefit is can use if from the wall.   Not that this cant be done but,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,   kind of an old machine to do this work to, going to need cable where a common cord would work, going to be loud and expensive to operate.www.urkafarms.com
Reply:You make a fair point. However there's honestly no comparing this thing with a newer inverter machine weld wise. Much smoother ark. Is it loud as hell? yes. Is it a gass guzzler? Yes. But it welds great and id rather have this 40-50 year old gas guzzler. I will be getting a inverter style stick/tig machine for at home/shop use at some point but for now this old clunkers what i got! plus to be honest in the field id rather just  fire it up an pull my reels than have to drag out another machine.
Reply:The dragging out is easier with new, 1 cord. I will agree with the old machine being a good welder, I have used a couple of those and own one similar and to tell the truth for general like it's good or better considering size and weight than the SA200's.  Like I mention earlier not that it can't be done, just more modern way to do it and gain a machine I would want anyway.www.urkafarms.com
Reply:Yours has a "better" engine but these really weld well.

Reply:is that your setup? Nice! yes very similar machine though i cant tell exactly from the picture the model of yours. I will say that your paint is certainly nicer than mine lol. I still hold my position that i would like to see if i can install the receptacle in this old welder.  I simply dont have all the knowledge i need to do so lol. Saw a guy online who did it to an old lincoln buzz box. Figure it would be just about the same thing being how similar the controls on the buzz box are.  Anyways, i know i could buy a separate machine and i will eventually. But even with a separate machine i think it would be nice to have this feature on this machine. especial beacuse who want to walk back and forth to control amperages when changing electrodes.
Reply:A 120V machine has made my engine drives near obsolete.  I have another small footprint machine in a service truck I am getting ready to abandon.  I like the arc better on the little older one.  Reach thru the box to operate.  These really got a genset, the old 210 is 6K rated, starts 5 hp without a blink.   I should look, the 8K in the truck might even have remote recept, dont recall. My old 210 isnt cv although they had it as option on them.

Reply:I suggest some of  this from actuall experience. After doing it awhile I have changed my mind ove quite a while and wouldn't do it the same way as when I started. I should sell some stuff should have sold it last oil boom. I wouldn't even buy it today. .Last edited by Sberry; 1 Day Ago at 01:15 AM.www.urkafarms.com

Reply:I installed a remote on a machine I sold.  It was worth it and they needed it.   I also understand the want,,, that is fine also.  Its a great hobby too. People obviously want 200s too.  The learning cur5ve itself can be worth it.  The general background is a bit lacking with these type of posts.  Could do this near free with some help.  But, I come from a 60s buzzer till now and the cost to burn the same DC rod has never been lower and better and easier.  I wish they had this shat when I was starting out, what a pain in the arse,,, nothing wrong with any of it till it isnt, that onan is reliable as any and actually really good for what it is.       Like any machine can keep it up fine, I keep mine cause I got to have it, like a fire truck but if its humanly possible I take advantage if cost and time is money and look back at all and parked and obsolete.  I look at has investment to old equipment paid the machine you have is great to keep runninjg, if you run it enuf to wear it out you could have saved in fuel etc, Its the perfect part time machine and the 1 I keep and use also.  They are great when they are running and not running,,, already well depreciated and selling them at this point isnt get rich kind of collector car money and I am storage ready.    Like you said too,,, you are good at this kind of thing, this is not a bad ideam I get a bit bias, this is something I would have done at a point, its a noble idea and can work. I used to hard wire it all and tend to use a few more power strips and plugs than I used to so to speak.   IIf this wasnt a crisis or total hobby and w2anted to be somewhere in the end might take a little time and find something compatible, would also allow to go to a more modern engine so to speak.  You might never wear the onan out, thats a possibility, I would feel different about all this plan if I was in higher duty cycle or if was in a "nice to have" hobby scheme etc.www.urkafarms.com
Reply:I use old equipment.  Its stuff I already own. My rate is low anymore.  I would buy a DC buzzer today,,, used like Veg did, super buym super machine, well suited for it. I wouyldnt buy that new today with the same money.  15 or 20 yrs ago the Esab 180 would have been 2500$, now 700. Dual voltage and till a guy has had that for portable cant really appreciate it.  If I didnt already have one or 3 to do the work before I spent 50$ on anything else it would be on my short list if I was serious.  This line isnt directed at hobby guys but more to the confused if wondering what to do first.    I like to try to keep most of it stock, if the engine blows up tomorrow, any major piece in it goes south cost more than lunch money in to the scrap it goes, strip leads off and move another under.   Having said that for myu own evntertainment purpose only, probably belongs in somme other kind of thread but this likely to be short lived untill someone comes along gonna prove they can do it,,, haLast edited by Sberry; 16 Hours Ago at 11:18 AM.www.urkafarms.com
