I am finishing a small job repairing/building up 4 double sided wood chipper anvils that are 5/8" thick and about 12" long. The customer said to use a copper backer clamped to the edge of the anvil.I got some 3/8' thick copper bar and clamped it on. The first couple welded fine and the backer released without issue but the more of them I weld the worse the backer is sticking. I have never had a sticking issue with using a copper backer before. Any ideas?
Reply:I have to keep mine really clean when I do that
Reply:Make sure the copper and it's mating surface is clean for each weld, photos are always most helpful to solving problems

Reply:Is the copper getting hot enough to fuse with the weld metal?  It might be picking up some metal from the puddle with each additional weld.
Reply:I was not keeping it clean so that makes sense. It was getting pretty hot, how hot I don’t know.
Reply:As was said clean the backer after each unit. Also try yo have good contact with-out gaps.Timmetalcraft by mooseSoutheast Michiganhttps://www.facebook.com/Metalcraftbymoose
