I just received my welding rod to use with my TIG and couldn’t wait to use it. I ran a couple beads and then went to a butt weld. My question is about the penetration of these test welds. On the butt, how much should the bead protrude? I have a healthy bead on the weld side, but should the opposite show a bead too, or should I see a butt joint? Below are my photos, first is the back side, second is the weld side. Material is .050 steel. No idea the grade. Filler is 70S-2

Reply:With .050 steel you need around 50-55amps, you should be able to get full penetration with no problem. Aim for 1/16" or less reinforcement on the root.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power

Reply:Thin metal like that id wanna use a copper backing strip, then you can get full penetration with out bowing a hole in the joint. We've done so much, for so long, with so little. Were now qualified to do anything with nothing !
