I picked up an old Nugier H80-14-AP-BD 80 ton press that is pneumatic over hydraulic. It has a 5 inch cylinder bore so it appears the pump should be making about 10,000 PSI. It does extend but isn't making notable pressure. I've looked around for a manual but all I've found is spec sheet. http://uat.sterlingmachinery.com/med...s-brochure.pdfThe system appears original despite the rube goldberg appearance. I need to likely replace a bunch of o-rings and such. Anyone ever rebuilt one?Sorry about the sideways photos.
Reply:I have it working. I started tracing out the air leak I could hear and discovered the over pressure valve was stuck open. I cleaned it up and cycled the pump a few times with the end cap removed and it cycled some air/oil into the pump and freed it up. Who knows the last time it was used. It now thunk-thunks right up to pressure. For reference the plate is 1.25 and the gap is 8". Now I just need to start cleaning it up.I found the pump tag under a lot of grime. It's a Model A. Maybe I can find a manual or diagram for it.
Reply:I looked up the patent which describes how the unit works in great detail. It's pretty cool. https://patents.google.com/patent/US3465686I suspect the piston was simply stuck to one side causing the unit to exhaust continually. Here are the details: "Escapement valve push rods 54 and 55 are provided through the respective end walls 12 and 13 to operate a respective escapement valve 45 or 46 as a push rod is contacted by a respective piston 15 or 16. It will be apparent, that as a rod engages a ball, the escape valve opens thereby venting one of the passageways 47 or 48 to the atmosphere."
Reply:That seems like a major wear spot as I'm assuming it's a metal on metal seal.Does that actually build up to 10k psi? That is impressive. I've seen hydraulic filter presses that use 120 psi air to create 10k hydraulic pressure using an orfice plate. I have no idea how they work except for being told, Dont funk with it.
