Reply:Already have needle files. Too small & too fine. So a full size file & finer/smoother cut than a bastard.Found these: https://www.riogrande.com/product/Fr...ds&code=114772Not sure about them without personally inspecting. Seems they are for jewelry work.Last edited by robert-r; 4 Days Ago at 06:58 PM.Millermatic 255 Dynasty 280 DX TIGRunnerReady Welder IHypertherm 30XP

Reply:I was going to recommend Grobet USA if you're looking for swiss pattern files, they make some stellar files. You can get them off MSC Direct and probably other sites like McMaster-Carr etc. https://www.mscdirect.com/product/de...?item=60209525Generally speaking there's two types of hand file, the American Pattern and the Swiss Pattern. For American pattern files you have the coarseness of the file, the type of teeth on the file and the length of the file to figure out what the material removal rate and finish of the cut will be.- For coarseness you typically have bastard, second cut and smooth (or sometimes mill which is confusing because the teeth can also sometimes be called mill cut) cut.- For teeth you have curved cut (sometimes also called mill cut!) teeth, single cut, double cut and rasp cut. Generally speaking curved cut and single cut get a smoother finish than double-cut teeth and rasp-cut (assuming the same level of coarseness). - Finally the longer the file the coarser the file will be (e.g. a 6" second cut is finer than a 10" second cut) although I've seen some cheaper Chinese files that don't follow this rule and are the same coarseness for different lengths. If you want the next "step down" in coarseness from those fireball tool files, you're probably looking for a 10" or 12" long second cut file with double cut teeth. Swiss Pattern is simple, they're all double cut teeth with the same coarseness no matter their length. They measure coarseness in seven grades, #00 and #0-#6, #00 being the coarsest. A #1 or #2 swiss pattern file produces a similar-ish cut and finish as an American Second Cut file with double-cut teeth in my experience. A #3 swiss gets you about the same as an American smooth cut file with single cut teeth. Most of the "Needle" or "Jeweler's" swiss pattern files are a #4 or higher and I've never seen an equivalent type in American Pattern. Those are really only good for finishing or fine detail work but you can find them in lengths and shapes of the more typical 8-12" files.Last edited by Thoriated Wolfram; 3 Days Ago at 09:16 AM.
