Hi All,I sent one of my employees to Airgas to purchase Argon and some Mig wire today. The Mig costed $58.30, and Airgas charged me $43.35 as hazmat charge on the wire, a whooping 74.35%! I didn't go over the receipt till later afternoon and I immediately called the them. The guy answered the phone was the same one who made the sale and entered the sales order earlier in the morning. He couldn't give me an explanation but offered to drop the hazmat charge to $20.00. I told him "NO", even at $20.00, it's still 34.30%. As a small business owner I have never paid that percentage for hazmat. Plus, I demanded to know the percentage of hazmat fee Airgas is charging nowadays. The guy said he couldn't give me an answer at the second, he had to look it up somewhere, and since it's close to their closing time, he might have to get back to me tomorrow. I found it odd that an Airgas employee does not know the percentage of the hazmat fee but can enter it in their POS system, however I will wait to see what they come up with tomorrow. I am irritated by the fact that Airgas can enter whatever amount as hazmat at sale, I am beyond irritated by the fact they even actually offered to drop it to $20.00. So, how much should they charge the hazmat fee for a 11 pounder Mig wire? I should have just ordered from Amazon, $12 cheaper, and they will deliver the next day with Prime. I just want to ask everyone, is this normal since I know everything is increasing.
Reply:Wow, Airgas is still in business?  Who knew???
Reply:Typical Airgas sales trick. A lot of medium businesses never notice. My advice is find another LWS.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR"

Reply:My LWS was recently bought out by AG, the guys working the LWS were actually moved over and will still be at the counter.I asked if pricing would stay the same and was told it will, although I haven't had a chance to test that. Worst case there is onemore LWS family owned in the area just further away. Time will tell...RichardWest coast of Florida
Reply:Watch your bills. All I have to say. I usually don't go over the receipts on the same day but I did today, partially because the employee I had sent over to Airgas it getting on with age, don't see too good without glasses. I just wanted to make sure everything was correct. On the other hand, I have seen business pulling the same $Hit before, just never so bluntly. Only 2 lines of items, they added a huge hazmat as high as 75%. Who wouldn't notice?Oh, and besides the hazmat fee, there's also an "Energy Charge" of $2.69 added on the Mig wire. What is that?!Last edited by EnterpriseMarine; 3 Days Ago at 09:18 PM.ENTERPRRISE MARINE & RV LLCAuthorized Distributor for Load Rite / Venture Trailers888-402-0808 386-473-2819www.movemyboatrv.com
Reply:I very much like the people at the local Airgas. I still rent a couple tanks there. I've pretty much boycotted their supplies. I can't remember the exact fees, I'll relate them as I recall: Back cap for a TIG torch                                                                                      3.69Shipping      (I picked it up off a rack in a local store)                                           20.79Fuel surcharge                                                                                                    7.22HAS MAT charge                                                                                                13.62Sales tax                                                                                                             2.23Total                                                                                                                   46.92I threw a fit! Reply:It seems that AG charges a hazmat charge on EVERYTHING from gas, fillers, even stainless brushes.  I stopped giving them MY MONEY.  Started dealing with another company and noticed that they were charging a hazmat fee.  When I questioned that on everything, they would cut the fee on certain items.  I called for a quote on wire, got a answer from one person.  Went to pick it up and got charged another amount.  I had enough of the horse hockey, went ballistic over being the anal sex recipient and then got totally new pricing.  IF enough folks would wake up and STAND UP, I believe this crap would stop.  That's my story and I'm stickin to it.
Reply:By law, the vendor should present the buyer with MSDS if they are selling you hazmat product. If they charge you hazmat on a pair of gloves, it's a good idea to ask them where is the MSDS. Selling hazmat products without MSDS can lead to $500 fine per day.I didn't get to that point yet to bring up the MSDS, I just asked Airgas why there's a hazmat fee on Mig wire. The guy didn't say anything about something or anything being a hazmat product, instead he said "we had to pass the blah blah blah costs onto the customers". I hit back with "for 75%?!

", that's when he offered to drop the hazmat fee to $20. There were so many illegal practices on so many levels, but where we at there's not much competition for this type of suppliers. LWS is more than 200 miles away. We used to have a local welding company who sold gases too, but they went out of business a few years ago. I just don't understand how can someone doing business like this. As a business owner myself, I always, always, disclose price, any fees, any discount, any potential issues up front. No surprise, nothing. For this Mig wire purchase, the fees included "Energy Charge" and hazmat together is 79% of the product price. Are they kidding me?

Reply:I can't fathom why anyone would even buy so much as a toothpick from Airgas - unless they have no other option within 75 miles..... Airgas' only objective is to screw everyone out of every penny they have. Still wondering why our worthless government is allowing this monopoly to grow in size.Millermatic 211Lincoln Precision TIG 225Century 250 MIGLincoln 225 AC Box (sold)I support my local welding store (Amazon, McMasterCarr, Cyberweld, EBay).

Reply:Airgas is outrageous on everything. Bought a 60 nitrogen and had it filled for $100 less at another LWS for what they wanted for a 40. Only $3.60 for the Hazmat charge. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:Years ago they charged me something like $8 hazmat charge on asmall roll of solid mig wire and a couple of other small items.  Noneof the items were what I would consider to need any special handling or documentation for hazmat. Maine Oxy opened a store almost across the street, so that’s where I go. If I have to go to Airgas , Inow always ask if there’s a hazmat charge on what I’m buying. Ifthere was I would leave empty handed, but…. there never seems to be.Miller a/c-d/c Thunderbolt XLMillermatic 180 Purox O/ASmith Littletorch O/AHobart Champion Elite

Reply:Back when I was still buying stuff, Airgas seemed to automatically charge hazmat on everything.  They usually removed it when requested on things like solid wire.  That's not a hazmat item.My name's not Jim....

Reply:Wow that’s outrageous. My local independent charges a $10 or $12 (I don’t remember I think it was $12) hazmat fee per tank exchange. I lease the cylinders and I find this fee dishonest but $12 on a $75 exchange is not outrageous. They certainly don’t charge a hazmat fee on wire or other non gas items!Last edited by 426hemi; 15 Hours Ago at 12:35 PM.
Reply:I did have a similar experience at a car dealership. I had just bought a new car a few months prior. I went to get a duplicate key made (this was a normal key no fob or anything but it had a chip). The car was so new no one else could make a key. They quoted me something outrageous I think it was over $300 for a key. When I picked up the key they added a $20 hazmat fee! I was absolutely furious ended up screaming at the manager “hazmat fee for what metal shavings, ect” the response was “we add that to every bill” needless to say I eventually got it removed but will never do business with these criminals again!
Reply:I'm an electrician. Every day I work on voltages could kill me. In my case, highest voltage I've worked on was 480. When a bill comes to $500. is it appropriate to charge $400. hazardous work fee?I have managers insist I work it live. 99% of the time I refuse. Can I charge the hazardous work fee when power is turned off? Gee, Airgas does!An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared.
