How do you recommend completely cleaning silicone off of steel to prep for welding? Ive cut and scraped off as much as silicone as I can, however Im concerned that a grinder may just spread the silicone around, not to mention contaminate the grinding wheel.
Reply:What are you planning on using steel for?Dave

Reply:Wire wheel should take it off relatively easy. A hard grinding wheel would also. Avoid flap or sanding discs.
Reply:It’s a tire rack on back of Jeep. It had rubber strips silicones on for rubbing protection. I want to clean it, repair a few welds, and then repaint.
Reply:But won’t the silicone contaminate the wheel and disc?I’ve heard that there are industrial silicone-cleaning products (not for sale in retail, I’m guessing due to toxicity???)
Reply:You probably could remove the residue with Acetone...
Reply:Are you trying to remove silicone or the adhesive holding the strips?
